Apparently I'm getting old and not thoroughly reading things I noticed a day later now that Chris shot an 86 which is also very good. That is an awesome improvement for both of those guys. They could be hard to deal with next year for a lot of people. I think they're coming for Kyle.

I think that’s when we’re starting back up, but maybe March. I can’t wait either because I’m shooting like crap with my center fire rifle lol.

G1 is .1720 on most.....but pay heed to what Kyle said. Also, even though charts are good, I have never shot a series of distances using a chart and been ‘on’ at each distance, there are always variances.....DOPE is King.

I am glad everyone had a great time, and I hope to be able to participate in future events.

Based on what I learned here, I made a new steel target for an upcoming Boy Scout camping - details here:
steel target for Scouts

Looks great, Will. I would suggest something to cause just a bit of drag so the target ‘settle’ quicker after being hit, giving the shooter more time for good shots.

Very nice! How about one that you have to hit 2-3 times to get it to make a full revolution? Shot #1 gets it moving, #2 increases the swing, #3 gets it over the top! Maybe in 2 shots if really solid impacts.

Interesting!

I used to shoot at a shooting range that had a pepper popper that worked like that with 9mm. It would only fall "if" you hit it enough times in a row to create enough momentum. It was great for teaching double tap drills.

For the 22lr, I would have to experiment with the arm length and mass, plus it would also depend greatly on the ammo you use - our subsonic 1000fps ammo will not move the target as much as the 1300-1400fps hunting ammo. Would need to figure out how to account for that difference somehow.

I think it would be a great target to figure out and build for adults, but certainly not for the Boy Scouts as we are teaching them mostly the fundamentals and we don't want (yet) to encourage them to try to shoot too fast cool

The one we shot at JG’s shoots (centerfire) would not make it with .223 but with anything heavier. .243 with 87 grain took 3 solid impacts, maybe 4 whereas 7mm could do it in 2. It’s not as much shooting fast as it is ‘when’ to shoot. You had to hit it going away, hit it swinging the wrong direction would stop it. A long arm and lighter weight target would give you long, slow swings vs. a shorter arm and heavier targets.

Do you have a photo or some other visual to help me "see" how that target was put together?

I recently ran into this video by Gavin where he is shooting at a rimfire spinner pro, and a couple of times if he hits it right, it makes it spin faster:

That’s pretty close but the one we used had only 1 leg (about 4’ I think) with a foot or so of extension on the other side, it settled faster.

you guys trying to add a swinging KYL stage to these matches?

If so, in real life the swinging KYL is a match all to its own.

If you ever find a picture, please post it. In the meantime, I looked at my crap steel bin and found enough metal to make one spinning target similar to the one in the video above. I just ordered some sealed bearings so that I can provide smooth turning. I "might" get lucky and have it ready in time for the December campout but I am not going to stress about it as I already have one new target for the kiddos (and adults) attending camp smile

OK, got a new target made - here is a video:
swing target

I will post a picture once it is painted. I suspect that it is too heavy for 22lr - hope to get to try it before the camping trip.

OK, spinner target ready. Like the other targets, since we go to the same site every Dec, I design these targets so that we leave the posts in the ground, and just take the moving parts back to storage:

Not a swinging KYL, Buzz, a swinging target like at Jason’s matches only for center fire. Gotta hit it 2-3 times to get it over the top.
