I grew up in South Texas and couldn’t count the Rattlesnakes, Cottonmouths, and Copperheads I’ve seen. I now live in NE Texas and have come across my share of Copperheads, Cottonmouths, and even a few Timber Rattlers, but I have never seen a Coral snake in the wild. Interesting pic and the misinformation thread dispelled all the myths I heard growing up. Thanks for posting.

They look cool for sure. I was probably 8-9 years old and saw the only two I have ever seen in Carrol Creek while we were Crappie fishing. My granddad recited the red touch yellow rhyme and told me to stay away from them. He was in his 70's and grew up here, and it was the first two he had ever seen around here.

I was very fortunate when I was a young kid. I was bitten by a coral snake on my foot. My mom killed the snake and put it in a jar and called the hospital to let them know she was bringing me in with a coral snake bite. She took me to town to the emergency room, bringing the snake along to confirm identification. The doctor assessed the bite and determined it was a "dry" bite and no venom had been injected. I was almost the first person in my community to ride on a life flight helicopter as the doctor had already dispatched it to fly me to Houston. The snake that bit me was 24 inches long and was missing a portion with the head that was chopped off with garden hoe. I later learned that 30-50 percent of coral snake bites are dry bites where no venom is injected.

I've lived in and hunted all over S Texas all of my life, and I've never seen a copperhead anywhere. Just curious as to the area where you saw them.

Used to run across coral snakes n Llano on occasion, but haven’t seen one in years. I agree that they don’t get a pass if they are near the house or where the kids might be. I see more copperheads than I do coral snakes.

Killed one in my driveway earlier this month and it was the second one I have seen in 16 years of living there. We are just north of Houston.

Caught one and put him in a syrup tub once. We let him go when the kids left.

The only good snake is a dead snake. And even then, it could bite you in the @$$ if you're not cautious.

I catch a few every year in my travels through the woods or on dirt roads. I have one tanned right now.I keep it hung in my gun closet ...keeps the wife out of there. lol. Here is the cool thing about them, when you put your boot on them or whatever you use to hold them down, they will curl up the end of their tail in a black ball and raise it and sway it around in the air to fool you or any predator into thinking that is the business end, while the eyes are searching for an escape route or a place to strike.

I have seen quite a few around gulf coast, most not much bigger around than a pencil. I kind of like them as far as snakes, never had a reason to kill one. They seem totally nonaggressive and I gave them a pass each time. Haven't heard or many coral bites and thats probably a good thing.
