I’m pretty mean but I would find it a little country to shoot my good looking dog and turn him into a bloody crime scene.
This is the way I feel about it.

It’s hard to lose one and sorry you are going through this. Two years ago we loss our 15 year old chocolate that we picked up in CO from a buddy on vacation. We got her the same year we were married and my wife wasn’t a big dog person but that dog changed her. They just don’t live long enough.

It’s not the easiest thing to do for sure, but don’t wait too long. I had to put down our dog last week, and the only regret I have is not doing it the week before.

Prayers up for you. I can relate, I'm in the same boat. My pup of 12 years is all but blind, can hear very little and can no longer jump into the truck but he gives it his best try then sits there waiting with a sad face for me to load him. If I see the day he starts suffering I'll take him to the vet. I feel I owe him as peaceful an end as possible.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

The quality of life of the dog is paramount. When a dog is not able to be a dog, it's time to take a trip to the vet. Tough choice but the right one. Prolonging that is a selfish decision.(I'm not implying that's what you're doing)

Prayers up. Don't let her suffer. I know how hard it is but it's the kindest, most loving and compassionate thing that can be done. Just be with her when she goes, you owe her that.

Have your vet do what needs to be done, just be holding her and looking her in the eye as she passes. They NEED someone they love with them.

If you wait too long, you'll regret it. These things always suck. Been there myself.

We lost our dog last Oct, so I know exactly what your family is going thru. Your dog has accomplished exactly what she was supposed to. Giving love and comfort to your family. Now that the time has come and as much as it hurts, you have to return that final act love by not letting her suffer. And no, it is not more manly, comforting, or easier doing it yourself. When our dog passed, my wife was holding her body and I was holding her head, and we were both crying like babies, but that dog left this world knowing he was loved. And yes, I have tears in my eyes now knowing how your family is hurting.

Let the vet do it, be with him as he slips away, he shouldn't be alone as he makes that trip. My 12 YO GSP just laid his head on my leg as I type this and his time will be sooner than later.
There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

Nestle is beautiful. When the vet leaves you’ll know you did right by her just as she has done for you and yours all these years. Know that many on here feel your pain as we have gone through this before and will again. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Tough time for sure. Had to put my chocolate lab down about three weeks ago and she was not even 11 years old yet. Be glad you got 14 years with yours. Mine got dementia really bad in a weeks time and was suffering so we put her down, very sad to see but when you know they are suffering it needs to be done. I would recommend having the vet do it though, mine is buried next to my other hunting lab she replaced 10 years ago.
God only knows how many thousands of ducks have been retrieved between those two dogs. Did not keep up with the last one but my lab before her had over 4,000 retrieves before she passed, she was a beast!

Same story here, my wife lost her puppy of 13 years in May. I have seen her loss two of the people she loved the most, and she took both of their passing better then she took the loss of her best friend and dog of 13 years. It was tougn for a month, and she said she didn't ever want another dog again. Fast forward 3 months and add a new puppy to the mix she is as happy as he has ever been. Man, I wish yall the best in yalls decision.

Go the vet route... we had our 14 y/o in his bed, the other dog was there, my wife and I... the vet gave him a shot to sedate and relax him first and then it took probably 10-15 minutes for us comforting him, loving on him, saying goodbye, etc. He drifted off to sleep, then he was given the second shot to put him down. It was very calm and peaceful... I will always do it this way. Tears as I type this. good luck.

took one our dogs years ago to the vet to have him put down. Plan was to be in the room with him but as soon as I set him down on the vets table I realized there was no way I wanted or could be in there. Sorry for your loss

It's a tough thing. Only you will know when it's time. Don't do it until you know in your heart she's ready - otherwise you'll second guess yourself once it's done. Let the vet do it - that's not the last memory you deserve and your dog deserves a more peaceful death. Be there with her as she goes; my wife deals with this multiple times a day and it's always the hardest on the animal when people don't want to be in the room. You owe your loyal companion that much.

Prayers for yall in this difficult time.
I have been in your situation multiple times in my life. I've put mine down myself - but in your situation, I think having your vet friend come and administer a dosage at home in a controlled setting is a good decision. That gives you the opportunity to be there comforting the ol' girl till the end.

I cannot fathom doing it myself, I want 100% certainty it is fast and painless....you can't do that yourself or maybe just I couldn't. We've done 3 over the years and they all suck but I owe it do the dog to be there with them. I also feel like the dog will let you know...you can see it in their eyes, they know. We had to go through this at the end of May...toughest and roughest day as a dog owner but no way I wouldn't hold them for their final breath. Good luck BB, it's TOUGH! Everyone handles it differently...I'm generally a blubbering idiot for a day or two and need some space, then I'm over it and ready to move on...my wife it takes longer.
