The drought a few years ago was really hard on a lot of the trees up in the Hill Country. Then throw in Oak Wilt and Decline on top of that and there is a lot of dead trees. Also with that trough there I would think animals spent a lot of time loafing there in the shade and caused some erosion of already shallow soil.

Not Hill Country but in 1995 I bought a place in Young County with about 100 pecan trees on it. By 2015 when I sold it they had all died because of the droughts. Lost a lot of oaks too.

would be nice to see him and get him late in the season so that he could plant some of his genes around
earlier in the season.

Beautiful deer

Where at in the hill country as I see a lot of mesquite in this picture?

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Great deer, do not get to see a 6x6 very often. I got lucky and took the only one I have ever seen.

That's why I put "Hill Country " in quotes, it's at the end of the hill country and the beginning of west Texas; between Junction and Menard. If you look really close, there's a smattering of true west Texas cactus low to the ground. Junction likes to call themselves part of the "Hill Country", and, I'm trying to blend in, so who am I to argue? There are hills around the town. grin
