I set up a new hog trap to aid in the population control of the bristly beasts. It is 8 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 4 feet tall. It has a push-open gate, spring loaded with a regular old screen door spring, and I added an access port to the rear of it to facilitate hog removal. I've put some corn in it and braced the gate open to let the piggies get used to going in and out. I'll get some better pictures of it if anyone is interested.

Will do! It will probably take several days for them to get use to the new amusement ride in the play ground!

Never had any luck with the push open spring door traps. Hogs would enter it when the door was propped open to get the corn inside but they wouldn’t push it open on their own. I finally decided to rig a trip line that allowed me to leave the door open and it would close when a hog was routing at the back of the trap. It also caught deer until I took the advise of another forum member who suggested spraying the door with WD 40. It kept the deer out and hogs don’t mind it at all. Good luck!

Same here with the push open traps We would get a flimsy stick to prop the door partially open so a pig would get up under the door with his head and and push on through. The stick would fall or be smashed when the door closed behind the pig. I have heard some guys have great luck with that kind of trap. Good luck mikei

I'll keep everyone informed of what luck I have and what things I have learned so we can all get the knowledge together to wage successful jihad on these darned hogs. I've been fighting them for over 20 years, and I never seem to stop learning how to get the upper hand on them.

I got up early this morning to answer the call of Mother Nature, and decided to take a look at my video feed of the new trap. Sure enough, there were two hogs in there, scarfing up corn! The picture is terrible, but if you blow it up a bit, you can see them. I'll keep the gate wired open for a while longer, and then gradually close it, a little bit at a time, until they get comfortable pushing it, and then let close it all the way and see what happens. pappybear, tell me about the trip line you rigged; I may want to try the same thing.

Lighted, that cool. Looks like there might be a third pig outside.

There may have been a third one; hard to tell with the poor quality of the pictures. Here's some pics from the game cam. I definitely have a deer problem so I wired a piece of rebar across the entrance and coated the gate pieces with lots of WD40. I've still got the gate wired open, but am hoping that by mid-week I can try to actually catch a few piggies!

Those pictures helped me understand your door. It swings to the side, not up as thought earlier. Here is what I did for a trap that the door hinged up. I am sure it could be modified to a side swinging door. It is just a cable tied to the door run through a few hoops with a thimble on the other end of the cable that hooks onto a peg. Door weight (spring tension in your case) keeps the hoop on, it will push right off.

Mikei, I rigged my trip wire in a very similar way that Simple Searcher’s schematic depicts. I tie trotline cord to the door and run it through several small eye rings along the top bar on the trap then down to an eye ring about 6 inches from the bottom of the trap. I attached a peg on the opposite side of the trap and pull the cord tight enough to open the door then tie a small key ring onto the cord that slips onto the peg. The eye rings must be on the side that the door hinge is on. The hook also need to be tilted slightly toward the rear of the trap to keep the ring from sliding off on its own. Most of the corn is piled at the rear of the trap under the cord. Routing hogs will have no problem tripping it.

And you're right; I think I could adapt your system to mine.

I use a different trigger mechanism that's tough to describe and I don't have photos handy. But, on it the trigger is not close to the ground. I set it up about 15 inches high so that raccoons wouldn't trip it. Also, if a small piglet or two gets greedy and runs in, they normally won't trip the trap door. The idea is that I catch larger hogs. Larger being at least 40 Lbs or so rather than the striped footballs.
If you're relying on hog just squeezing past the door, it doesn't much matter how you bait the trap. If you're using a trip wire or trigger to release the door, I put bait all the way in from front to back. That way you again avoid a small, greedy hog from rushing in and tripping the door. They'll work their way in slowly, gradually making it to the back of the trap and the trigger. Hopefully that allows more hogs to enter and you can catch more than one sometimes.

Thanks for the information, der Teufel. What I would like to do is to eventually have the hogs squeeze through the door that is held shut by the spring (which, of course, is the whole idea of this type of saloon door set-up). Until I can train them to do that, I'm looking at different trigger options. I have a couple of other traps that are the "rooter" types, and have had great success with them. And I "trained" the hogs the same way: wire it open for a few days; then lower the door a bit so they have to push a bit to get in; and then finally lower it all the way. I've caught lots of pigs with these, and have also used a self-trapping system where I use a small hog log behind the gate and the piggies come in and push on the log and gate until it latches. It's been quite successful but I wanted to try the saloon door trap to see if I can make it work.

Never had any luck with the push open spring door traps. Hogs would enter it when the door was propped open to get the corn inside but they wouldn’t push it open on their own. I finally decided to rig a trip line that allowed me to leave the door open and it would close when a hog was routing at the back of the trap. ! I am like Pappybear....never had luck with push open doors. My trigger is simple. A weight held up by a stick....the hogs knocks the stick away...the weight falls pulling a cord that releases the catch on a guillotine door. Deer don't bother the stick. Coons will trip it from time to time. I have been on a hog hunting hiatus for about six weeks but I finished a new trap myself Saturday. Place it at a hoggie intersection. Did a dry run Saturday night (corned it with gate wired up). Corn was gone Sunday. Loaded it with a gallon of corn Sunday night and unwired the gate. Found these two porkers in it this morning....two more for the bone pile.

Deer like to go in the one I had like that but hogs seldom went in it. Coral traps solved that problem.

I got the first two customers in the new trap early this morning. A teenager and a piglet. Piglet is in the freezer; teenager is in the bone pile. The trap held up nicely to the battering it took from these two little guys.
