We usually just plant seed oats for the deer. What is yall's opinion on the best oats to plant? Do some draw them better than others?

We have had good luck with Buck Forage Oats, they are supposed to hold up to freezing temperatures better than some other varieties. Hopefully some true food plot experts will chime in.

My son and I have tried seed oats,feed oats ,Buck forage oats all in end to end food plots ,deer ate them all.Could be some are more cold tolerant but in east Texas when we planted it didn't get that cold to affect them plus deer kept them ate down.But this is just our experience ,deer ate the cheap feed oats just as well as the expensive ones plus the feed oats seemed to germinate just as well as the rest.

They will eat whichever one you plant and it grows if there is no other small grains planted close by. I had a friend do a test plot back in the mid 90's with oats, wheat and tritcale that were all planted at the same time. He said he had more deer grazing on the triticale than the other two combined. Said they would graze across the other two and spend all their time in the triticale. I think for most plots whatever is the youngest and tenderest will work the best.

I’m in north Texas and I mix wheat and oats 2-1 and they seem to eat all of it. When it’s first coming up and tender they’ll walk past the corn feeders and spend all their time in the green. I need to try some triticale if I can find it.

Feed oats here, no reason to spend big for a grain plot
