Things I dont like

1.Pompuss clients who are just there to shoot (I guide)
2.ill behaved children (beat the parents first)
3.The guy who get to drunk and starts showing his "whiskey muscles"
4. People who come to camp, drink and raise hell till 5am and then dont hunt only to complain that morning hunts suck.
5. People who show up with no Rifle and want to use yours
6.The guy who doesnt sight in or shoot his rifle other than opening day and mutter the famous words "can ya'll help me look for it, i think i hit it a little far back"

Things I love about deer camp

1. A good host that invites me to hunt on his or her property.

2. a good card games

3.Lots of bourbon

4. ANY BODY that has never hunted but wants to give it a shot

5. A well mannerd Child; (probably not your kid)....you know the one that helps take out trash and says please and thank you.

6. That cold opening morning when you wake up have a cup of coffee stick some TP in your pocket grab the rifle and Head out.....GOD HELP THE FIRST GUY TO MISS!

I like watching the sun rise.
I like watching the sun set.
I like Bloody Marys for breakfast.
I like Venison Tenderloins for Lunch!!!
I like the fellowship of my lease partners.
I like the smell and heat of a roaring camp fire.
I like laughing until I dam near pass out!
I like working hard and seeing the "fruits" of my labor.
I like the "gift" of the outdoors that God has given me!
I like the "quality time" I get with my daughters!!
I like letting them do what they want and eat what they want at the lease!

I don't like....going home.

i left the most important thing off what i like about deer camp. "spending time with my son" would rather hunt with him than anyone in the world.

Like: The comradery...( telling stories, group goals, helping each of other, sharing duties)

Dislike: (Drunks- expecially mouthy ones.)

This is a great post! I miss the deer camp thing with my family (dad, brothers and sometimes uncles). I hunt/camp alone usually, which is probably for the best; I don't believe in guns and alcohol and I can fall asleep in 10 seconds and been told I snore loud enough to wake the dead (sleep apnea). I hunt state and camp in a tent and usually there are other campers to visit for the campfire stories, next best thing to hunting is talking about it.

I like most everything about deer camp except;
camping area was closed for remodel at two different state land areas last year (I was informed when I showed up).
no campfires were allowed was put into effect after the second night of camping.

Not real sure yet. This is my first year on the lease and have not meet one person I hunt with. So far what I do like about camp. I have my own bunk house. We have running water/electric and satellite TV. We have an above ground pool, a 20' x 40' living/common area that will have a pool table, big screen tv, and a nice kitchen. We have John Deere Gators to use on the lease a jeep and a truck. Oh and I get to shoot exotics!!!!! I am sure the I don't like wil come soon enough.

Why do some hunters hunt so they can get away from "it all"
for a few days, and bring "it all" with them? It makes no sense to me.

I haven't hunted leases that much, and from the posts I've read here I don't think I want to be on a lease at all!

It seems every lease I've heard about the land owner wants to bitch about every little thing he can think of. I was born on Texas hill country ranch, and had only three rules, for a hunter hunting on our place. Don't leave gates that are closed open, or close gates that are open. Don't shoot toward the house,or at cows. and if you bring it in, take it out! Those are the rules, and they never changed in my whole life on that ranch. I have no problem with a land owner setting a size limit under which you don't shoot, that is just common sense. I can't stand a drunk, and I will not hunt with a sot, especially one who sets out to get his butt kicked with his attitude. Guns, and "WHO HIT JOHN" do not mix, and when that is the sittuation I simply leave, and do not return.

I usually hunt on the 36,000,000 acres of public land in New Mexico, or on the tundra of Alaska, and usually hunt and camp alone in NM, and with three other guys in Alaska.

What I like about camp for any game, where I hunt, is no rules other than set by the Game department, and being free to camp anyplace I see fit. When hunting with my three sons, or with the three guys I have hunted Alaska, and canada with for yrs, we hunt in pairs, and help each other pack in meat, and do the cooking, and clean-up.

The one place I hunt with a group is with the DRSS get togethers at the 4K ranch for the anual get together in Jan of each yr. Right after the Dallas Safari Club show in Dallas. This is more a meating of members from all over the world, than a hunt, and about the only thing we hunt is Feral hogs. For serious hunting I like to hunt alone, or just with a PH/guide!
