Just heard that he passed today at 86...he had a good long run...RIP

got to meet him long ago at the Super Bowl in Rice Stadium. He sang the National Anthem. We had rehearsal at Tully Field at 10am the day before. My job was to pick him up at the Hyatt Downtown Houston at 8am, get him to rehearsal.
i knocked on his door at 8am. He cracked the door and in several choice words, told me he didn't rehearse chit,
always liked him, but like most celebs, he was kind of a "richard"

when I was a kid, I lived on Prestoncrest, if you crossed Preston it became McShan, Charlie lived on McShan. This was near 635 (LBJ) & Preston Rd. North Dallas

I saw him the first time he played in Houston at the old Texas Ballroom. Nobody knew he was a black guy and you could have heard a pin drop when he walked out onto the stage. He broke the ice with a couple of jokes and then sang for at least an hour and a half.
