In 1999 or 2000 I ran into what I believe was a Black Bear in Walker County north of Huntsville.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Nothing stops one from walking in from an adjoining state. So they will be there since they exist in Arkansas and Louisiana.

I think it was 1999 or 2000, a black bear was seen and captured inside the city limits of Texarkana, Ark. Some think the bear came out of Mercer Bayou or Sulphur River bottoms.

My place is between Huntsville & Trinity, south of the river. Where did you see it?

I’ve never seen one in Texas or Louisiana, but my cousin back in NE Louisiana has shown me plenty of game camera pictures of bears on his land - mostly at his corn piles.

SnakeW, where in west Texas? Big Bend, Guadalupe Mountains, NW Panhandle Big Bend Ranch area is where I've heard of reports....but also ^^^^^ Terrell County, Pecos County, Val Verde County, Menard County, etc have all had confirmed sightings, road kills( in either Pecos or Brewster counties IIRC) or like in Menard where a bear was killed(Google it to see what happened on that one). I hunted in SE Pecos county back in '94 on a large ranch that bordered the Longfellow and one of our group saw a bear walk between him and his feeder late one afternoon close to dark..the bear stood up on its hind legs and looked at the hunter(sitting in a bluff) then kept moving east. We were told that they were moving up out of Mexico up into the Trans Pecos due to the long term drought south of the border. I had a customer need to get a timered protein feeder repaired and rebuilt when a bear ripped the timer box, solar panel and top off trying to get to feed..that was in the late 90's. He was either in very northern Val Verde or southern Terrell county IIRC in a larger acreage subdivision. He had found tracks from the bear around his feeders and water trough. IIRC there was an unconfirmed sighting of one in Kerr County a few years ago. I know when I hunted up in the Panhandle a few years ago I was told there was a bear trap/transport trailer at one of the TPWD offices up there. The more people do water improvements, supplemental feed and run trail cams the more bears are being seen all over West/SW Texas.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

Here in Missouri we are getting the Arkansas bears migrating north. There are sufficient numbers (estimate is 500- 600 conservatively) that our Conservation Dept is proposing a limited quote season in south Missouri (??2021 or 2022??). We also had a famous bear “Bruno” sighted near St Louis that they captured and relocated. From sighting reports he came down from Wisconsin.

On the "tasty" thing. I think fall or when they are putting on weight helps with that.

Growing up in Huntsville you would go over to a friend's house or their Grandparent's house and you would sometimes see some old black and white photos of Walker County hunting clubs in the early 1900s with black bear hides spread out on the sides of cabins and barns or bears hung from trees . Back in the day they were hunted with dogs and shotguns. Just my .02, LeonCarr
