I use brush killer from Walmart which works pretty good.

A friend of mine died a number of years ago after sitting around a bonfire made with cut wood that had poison ivy growing on it. He inhaled some smoke or fumes from the fire and the oils from the ivy damaged his lungs. His name John Kwon, he was a good guy and regular on lightfighter. Dude was tough as nails, I was shocked to hear what got him.

I have read about that happening. As much as I hate round up , it did not work on it.

HDX Weed & Grass killer. Get it at Home Depot. I use this at the lease and it kills everything it touches.

We have a lot of Redbirds that disperse the seeds from eating fruit and keeping the ivy at bay was like a dog chasing his tail before I found a solution that worked.

This is what I now use. It works great and was inexpensive, around $12 or so at Walmart. Once you spray it it'll take a couple weeks but it kills it roots and all where it wont come back. Its a systemic poison that spreads throughout the whole plant.

(sorry for the upside down pic. I was right side up when I took it, I guess my ipad was upside down)

Glyphosate (at least 41%, 43% better) with surfactant if yours doesn't already contain surfactant, spray in the flower or fruit stage on warm to hot full sun day.
Triclopyr with surfactant spray at full leaf stage on warm to hot full sun day.
Ortho brush b gone at normal retail places is a triclopyr product and does a good job if applied correctly. Ready to spray.
Ortho Poison ivy killer / tough brush concentrate.
Bayer / Bio advanced tough brush killer.
Brushtox w triclopyr concentrate

As with most herbicides timing & conditions play a big part of successful outcome.
If using any concentrate read, understand & follow label directions.

The active ingredient in most of the recommendations is Triclopyr.

Apply at the right time & at the right rate it will take out poison ivy, no problem.

Any of the ready to use type with at least 7.5% triclopyr will work well, most rtu will contain 8% - 8.8%.
Concentrate with surfactant mixed to label instruction rate for target species will work best.

One reason some folks don't get a good kill is improper timing, sure you can spray anytime conditions are favorable, for absolute best kill timing is key.

Never a good idea to burn poison ivy or wood that has poison ivy vines on it.

That Bayer Brush killer as suggested above / products w/ 8% Triclopyr as suggested.
Follow directions for poison ivy, if you buy the concentrate.
I add a teaspoon dawn detergent per gallon to make sure it penetrates waxy mature leaf.

If you have a huge area to treat, search for CROSSBOW herbicide - same ingredients but double strength/ half price, at farm/ranch stores.

DONT apply it over 90degrees- early morning/ cool evening only. Plant won’t take it in over 90.

It will take 2-3 weeks to kill it, but it wont come back! (Though dormant seed might come up following year or two).

This 40acres I bought was covered in the stuff, and I’m highly sensitive. I had 4” vines going up some huge trees!
Multi-year effort for me!
Glyphosate/roundup just burns the leaves off but doesn’t kill the woody stem/root.

I’m winning the war- got just 1 patch left to conquer!
