Brother called this weekend said truck wouldn't run. Its a 2005 chevy Duramax got about 170,000 miles on it. Full tank of diesel pretty fresh fuel filter, ran great when he parked it, when to move it down the fence row he was working on it started ran rough then died. I cracked the fuel filter vent plug it was still primed no air. If you try to start it again it will start but only run for a second or two then die again.
I think the fuel pump sounds funny and believe its the culprit. He called a diesel shop and described it they said sounds like a cracked fuel filter housing, its going to the shop to get fixed, but anyone else want to guess at what it is. I wish I had time to mess with it more. He has had the cracked fuel filter housing before and you could see the leak on it, it also would only not run after it sat for several hours and if you re primed it, it would start and run fine till you let it set overnight again. This wont stay running at all.

no dealings with the Duramax, but plenty with the old 6.2L and 6.5L chevys ... and those symptoms sound like injector pump or injector pump seals.

Was the primer on the filter housing firm? If not it could be bypassing internally but usually they will leave residue around the outside of the primer. Also ck and make sure the security light isn't flashing. Other than that it will probably need to be hooked to a scanner to read the pids to get accurate info as well as any codes it may have. Also was it left setting on the fenceline if so a squirrel or rat may have chewed on some wiring.

No not a rodent problem from sitting, it was just there that morning, area is cleared and mowed.
Also I forgot to mention it has a full tank of diesel but the gauge reads empty, the gauge has always worked up to this time also.
The primer pump wasn't firm, I cracked the bleed screw and it pumped fuel. Around the fuel filter housing was clean/dry.

Did you pump it up tight and then try to start it? Sometimes you may have do it a couple time before it will pick up fuel. And what about the security light..

Yeah, pumped it up a few times and tried it. No change. Don't think the security light was on.

IPR valve could be stuck I have replace several over the years. But you would need to see data stream to verify. Sometimes you can tap on it with a long extension and free it up.

waiting on the outcome from mechanic ... What was the outcome?? Turned out it was a Chevy. It had already exceeded its life expectancy. But seriously, what did they find?

It went to a local diesel shop Saturday morning. Haven't heard anything back yet.
Lord I know the ford chevy debate lives forever, but its been a solid pickup. Its got some stuff that we have replaced, wheel bearings, cv axles, water pump, and a fuel filter housing is all I can think of. Its been a damn good truck. The mechanic hasn't gotten too it yet, but said he didn't suspect the injection pump, maybe the pressure regulator.

I have an 03 Duramax with 303,000 and over the years have rebuilt fuel filter housing (replacing O rings mainly) 3 times. The symptoms you describe sound a lot like what mine did. It was worse in hot weather. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion. I asked again this weekend he still hasn't heard anything back on it, the shop is pretty back logged. He is suppose to get to it today.
We have had the issues with the fuel filter housing a time or two. In the past when that was the issue it would only cause the truck to loose prime after sitting a while thought. You could prime it and it would start and run fine unless parked for 12+ hours. This just wont go, so either that's it and the leak is much worse or something different.

Suppose to be a bad fuel injector control module.

Nope still at shop. Says only place he can get the part is at the dealer that other places list it but won’t deliver once ordered. The dealer wants shy of $2000 for the part.

Duramax LLY are famous for FICM wire harness rub that cut, chafe, rubs through the wire insulation where it comes into contact with the FICM bracket.
It is uncommon for a FICM to go bad, it is very common for the wire harness to rub, vibrate against the bracket & cause problems. Shorts to ground, shorts or unintended contact with various other wires in the harness.
The harness is tied down with a zip tie, cut that away remove plastic covering & carefully inspect the wires in the harness. Repair, protect harness from sharp edge of bracket with rubber hose or wire loom protector of some sort.
LLY also has common injector connector issues, sometimes mis diagnosed as an ficm gone bad or flaky. you can buy repair pigtails for about $9 each.
