I recently got my BOGO Octane 45k. I have a 1911 that I love and can't afford my dream host (h&k mk23).

Just looking for whatever info or comments people have about converting an existing 1911 into a threaded version. My 1911 is a bone stock Kimber stainless II. It's so basic it still has the combat sights, meaning no dots or anything. I see "drop-in" options but I'm a bit skeptical as I always heard a 1911 needs to be properly fitted by a gunsmith. I'm pretty handy in general and willing to try diy, but I also don't want to mess up one of my favorite guns. Not knowing what I can get into and the pitfalls currently makes me not even wanna try it myself if it requires removing metal to finish the barrel installation.

Finally, this is great excuse to buy another gun. Related to above, if the estimates of the 1911 barrel swap exceeds $300+, then I think I'd much prefer another gun that is cheap-ish with a factory threaded barrel. Currently considering smith and wesson M&P 2.0 threaded 45. So I welcome thoughts on this gun and maybe some other stock pistols in 45 with a threaded barrel from the factory. Let's anything that can be reasonable had for less than $1000, closer to $700 would be great. Unlike rifles, I don't like messing with pistols so factory sights tall enough to clear a suppressor would be a huge plus. A drop-in barrel swap is about all I want to do.

You'll have to go aftermarket, pistols in general do not have enough barrel hanging out past the slide to thread. Look for a Remington R1 Threaded, I had one when I put in for my Octane 45K on the BOGO. Sold it and really wish I had it back. They can be had for pretty cheap around $600-$700. If I were in your shoes I'd sell the Kimber and find one of the Remington R1 Threaded 1911's. It also comes with suppressor sights.

KRoyal, I will totally give the R1 consideration. I've just shied away Remington products the last few years. Usually because of bad rumors and much better options at same price. However, t600-700 seems reasonable and quick google search seems most people like theirs.

As for selling, NO! I love this thing. To paraphrase..I know there are many out there like this one, and some much better, but this one is mine!

A threaded barrel would run you 200 and up plus sights another 125. That’s not being installed or fitted. Depending on your skill level you may have to have it done so 65 an hour is what I heard last for work. Probably 2 or 3 hour of work it’s starting to get up there.

An excuse to buy another gun. The Remington is a good choice. Budget friendly rock island but probably would need some love before it was reliable. If it doesn’t have to be a 1911, glock, S&w, fnx or xdm. Watch grabagun on the xdm they have had them under $300 from time to time.

I'd look at this. Just wait until a used one comes up for grabs.

Could you elaborate more as to what kind of "love" an RIA might need before being reliable? I just really love this pistol so the idea of screwing it up is more my concern. My track record with all forms of gunsmithing has some bad mistakes included. Now a cheaper one may interesting. I've heard before RIA was the manufacturer for the diy guy, similar to Savage rifles.

Also, I shot and do like the fnx 45 tactical. It's on my list but hard to find right now for a price near $1k.

I’ve had one and it ran good once I tore it apart and polished everything. Added a Wilson combat barrel bushing and recoil spring. I think that was all I replaced. Polishing helped a ton as they are not the best built from the factory. Fed hp no problem after that. Never skipped a beat.

I think so. I have a Glock 19 that I shoot the most proficiently with. I found a couple good options for threaded barrels and they are drop-in. barrels from everything i read Besides, I love 45 and think it is the coolest caliber to shoot suppressed. There is just something different about it. Unfortunately, my 1911 is the only 45 own.

G21 and a lone wolf barrel would put you around $600 if you bought the pistol used.

The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.
