My buddy is giving me a 9mm. I use my 308 to bust hogs. They usually have a bad outcome with the 308. That being said, I am going to strap the 9 on while I'm out hunting. What ammo would you recommend just in case I had to finish the job? I'm way more likely to run across a rattlesnake than I am to run across pissed off hog.

And yes, I realize it's not the best tool for the job.......but it is free.

Thoughts....

I’d go with Underwood Extreme Penetrators. That’s what I keep in my .45 as a sidearm backup while hog hunting.

I've used a 9mm with fmj's to kill a lot of hogs in traps, or finish them off on the ground. No need for expensive ammo for them.

Yeah, I often just end up using my rifle to finish hogs because the hunting ammo in it is cheapo than the self defense ammo in my pistol.

Snakes? Well, you won't get a 9mm round to expand in a snake. Snakes or hogs, FMJ to the head would be fine.

I would buy the cheapest that I could find.

Hogs = cheap ammo
Snakes = SAA

I agree with the idea of using whatever is inexpensive if your intended purpose is primarily to finish hogs.

Along that line of thought, my buddy and I just carry .22 pistols.

My Army buddies used to say I was so tight that "You squeak when you walk!"
I much prefer terms such as "frugal" or "thrifty" but, whatever.

I've found a .22 to be quite adequate for snakes, too.

Anyway, there's no reason to pay a lot just to terminate a wounded hog. The fact that you found it means it's not very mobile.
