Rare for 2 units to go out at the same time. And yes they will be covered under insurance if it caused by hail.

I can't imaging a hail claim paying for the furnace. Maybe so though. But that is where the money is made. Outside unit is easy to replace so your deductible will not cover it without other damage I imagine.

Older unit is r22 so they would probably replace the whole thing

They are both working, one went out the other day. A friend of the family who works HVAC came over and replaced a capacitor, and charged it. He said it has a leak, and will need to be replaced soon. He didn't know how much longer it will run for. I just figured if we replace one we should probably replace the other. I just figured with the age, lack of efficiency, and being R 22 its probably time to move on.

I appreciate all the feedback, I have three companies coming out Friday......we'll know what the damage is then.

Well, I dont know how long this charge will last. If the hail did cause the leak, the storm was two weeks ago. Soooo if this current charge only last two weeks we'll definitely have to move on. Fingers crossed!

Can you get a roof claim? It all adds up to one claim.

Our roof is in good shape, a lot of our neighbors with original roofs are being replaced right now. We had up to golf ball size hail for 20 minutes.

File a claim and give the insurance company a chance to assist you. If nothing paid out, should not prove to be an issue. Nothing wrong with checking.

They went to a new refrigerant and quit making the old freon in January. Not only is the old stuff going to be harder to get, it's going to be expensive. The older systems aren't compatible with the new R410A. Probably a smart move to replace both.

My 2 units are 25 years old and both have slow leaks. Add r22 to one usually early summer and then the other needs it usually come around Sept. A couple under bucks vs thousands has been my band aide for years but the time is coming for full replacements. Just hate thinking about that kind of spend at this moment

yep, one of my units is 21 years old and still cranking cool air. The one we replaced had a leak and our a/c guy put freon in it a couple of times but said the leak was getting worse. the year we replaced it, we had to add freon in March and it needed it again during the heat of the summer, the a/c guy said at this rate, just the replacement freon will pay for replacement in fairly short order. Finding an a/c guy you trust is worth it's weight in gold!!! My wife does property management and has contacts that she uses for all the rentals she oversees (about 50-60), and those companies she frequently uses on all those properties show their appreciation by doing our private stuff at a reduced cost to us. I'm sure at some point the other unit will bite the bullet ...

Those 20+ yr old units were built like absolute TANKS! Too bad they were only like 10 SEER back then. And the new units are HUGE compared to the older ones to get the efficiency they’re able to get. My brother is nursing his leaking unit along too. He found brand new 30lb jug for $300 last week. I hope he picked it up. It nothing to top off the system

I thought the same thing and filed a claim with my insco. They had an inspector come out and sure enough, got approved for a new roof, gutters, and a fence. If you have hail damage on your AC's they might can add them to the claim. It's free to check.

I made the mistake of putting in just one 5 ton system rather two smaller ones. I don't have the option of asking how much. Its how soon for me.

My downstairs' unit a 5 ton had a leak on the compressor few years ago, I was able to just buy the outside unit for around $1k, had my buddy come over and evacaute the lines and put in some R22 I have a few jugs laying around back when I used to buy houses.

My other unit is originally I thinks it a 3 tons but only does upstairs, I rarely use it so far so good.

13k for one unit....... 17 seer 2 cycle Trane with some kind of air purifier. We could of got both for 15k, but they would of been bare bone units. This chet gets expensive fast.

I just got priced on a 3.5 and 4 ton unit, 14 SEER, $6k and $6.5k. New outside units and air handler inside. Rheem. And yes, call your insurance agent. A friend had her outside unit struck by lightning and they paid up. I would think hail damage would qualify also.

get another opinion. skip the trane clean effects and just have a 4" filter installed. bare bones aint all that bad. 14-16 seer will pay back long before that two stage unit. look it up.
