Any specific reason you want to use black powder?
I would just load smokeless if you can like many/most do in 45 colt and 45-70 etc.
It's hell eatin em live

I have done some loads for the 45-70 and 38-55 with black powder, it has been a while. You want a full case ie. slightly compressed load no air gap. Think of a muzzle loader and seating the patched round ball or bullet on the powder filling up the combustion chamber with powder, same with loading a BP cartridge. Here is some very good information for you. https://www.bpcr.net/site_docs-results_schedules/documents/bp_cartridge_reloading_dick_trenk.htm

I have found some info using Google for some of the crazy crap we load and play with. 45-70 shotgun rounds donlt hit squat, but the using black powder the smoke might scare them to death.

If not scare them, gives them pause to go through the smoke screen. Using real black powder gives that good rotton egg smell also

Which rifle are you looking at. Over the years there have been different bore diameters for the 38-55. The one I have is .375 and per the maker of it I cn shoot 375 Winchester if I want, and if I shoot the buffalo bore heavy loads with the .378 bullets Mr. Otto said will be about 60,000 PSI in that chamber so about 10K more than the 375 Win.
If it is an older rifle I would slug the barrel to know which bullet diameter to use. Over the years 38-55 has used bullets .375 to about .380.

Been a long time, but I do shoot and have hunted with an 1867 Husqvarna rolling block converted to 50/70. I use cast bullets and black powder. Like said, no published load data really needed. Kmon1's reply covered it.

Basically loading black cartridges is pretty simple. I like to use a felt wad over the powder, but you just have to load the case leaving only enough room to seat the bullet with a slight compression of the powder. No need to weigh the powder, just establish the right amount in a powder measure to get to the right level and go to it.... Be aware, that fouling can be a problem with repeated firing of black powder cartridges. Blowing down the barrel will help some as it will help keep the fouling soft.

Not exactly the safest thing to do with a rifle.

Not exactly the safest thing to do with a rifle. I would imagine he means after the shot, prior to loading the next round.

How in the world would someone shoot their finger off blowing into a barrel through an open chamber?

When using a cartridge gun, blowing down the barrel is done from the breach end.....not the muzzle ! The NMLRA is a muzzle loading organization ....an entirely different situation.

any one shooting rifles (non muzzle loaders) that are black powder guns? where do you get load info Back to the original question - Lyman Black Powder Handbook & Loading Manual has BP load data for rifle, pistol, and shotgun cartridges. 2nd edition is what I'm looking at. Goex also has some data. https://goexpowder.com/resources/load-charts/

Man I miss my T/C Hawken. 45 I had one in .50. It was fun, and I shot a deer with it. I never used it because of the clean up hassle and I don’t miss it a bit. BP is fun to shoot though!!
