I'm at a loss of what they are trying to accomplish here. They don't want officers putting their hands on people but they are taking away most of the non-lethal options available to do that. And correct me if I'm wrong but isn't deadly force already used as a last resort option? Oh and zero use of force incidents? I hope Delia Garza lets her constituents know they can no longer fight with the police to avoid these incidents.

Quote
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Four members of the Austin City Council will hold a press conference at 11:30 a.m. Monday to discuss resolutions related to police reform on the June 11 meeting agenda.

Mayor Pro Tem Delia Garza, along with council members Natasha Harper-Madison, Greg Casar and Jimmy Flanagan will discuss items they’ll put forward in Thursday’s regular meeting.

Casar will introduce Item 95, which includes:

Banning the use of tear-gas, rubber bullets, bean bags, etc.
Banning chokeholds/strangleholds
Using deadly force as a last resort, use de-escalation tactics first, banning shooting at people fleeing
Reducing military-grade equipment
Ending no-knock warrants
Not using enhanced facial recognition
Delaying the July cadet class for the Austin Police Department
Garza will introduce Item 50, which she says “lays out clear goals we can set right now and hold ourselves accountable” to these charges:

Zero racial disparity in traffic stops
Zero racial disparity in arrests and citations that result from traffic stops
Zero use-of-force incidents
Zero deaths at the hands of APD officers
Flanagan will introduce Item 93, that converts the Council Judicial Committee to the Council Public Safety Committee.

Casar said it may take time for these items to go into the manual, but if the items are passed at Thursday’s meeting, they should go into effect immediately.

Flanagan, meanwhile, realizes that bureaucracy slows things down and they will move as quickly as the system allows them to on implementing what passes Thursday.

“That’s what I mean when I say it will be frustrating,” Flanagan said.

"Delaying the July cadet class for the Austin Police Department" May have to speed it up if enough officers re-sign---as they should with these changes.

I can almost guarantee you it will. At least initially. When the police refuse to come to work that may change but the city council is the biggest bunch of clowns I've ever seen. Greg Cesar is the one who publicly stated that 40% of his voting constituents were illegal aliens when Austin created the 1 million dollar illegal immigrant defense fund. Funny they are claiming they are out of money now when they waste it on stuff like that.

Now they have updated it to include cutting 100 million dollars from the police force. This keeps getting better and better.

Quote
When asked about the Austin Justice Coalition’s charge to the city council to reduce the Austin Police Department’s budget by $100 million in the next budget cycle, Garza said she’d be willing to sign on with that.

“I’ve been on board since the first year I was on the council to put money where we can actually make an impact,” Garza said.

Casar agreed.

“We need to talk about treating homelessness with housing, not just jail,” Casar said. “Just another patrol car going up and down the street doesn’t necessarily make everybody safer.”

Flanagan said there’s a lot of stuff in the police budget that doesn’t have to be there because the police shouldn’t have to be involved in the first place.

“When we start digging into what these line items mean, it might be more than $100 million,” Flanagan said. “This is not about doing things in a different way, it’s about doing them in a better way.”

'Seems like city politicians in Austin, Minneapolis, Portland and Seattle will all be competing soon for President of Utopia. I don't care what Norml says, they've all been smoking too much grass.

I'm sure the "me too" San Antonio city council will make some sort of statement soon. And THEN...we'll all get to hear what Nelson Wolff thinks about it. bang

So if they ban shooting at people fleeing, I think I can see the new response to freeze...

The irony of Cesar and Garza wanting no police is they represent the most crime ridden districts in the city. Maybe we can just cut off police to their districts and redirect everyone to the others. I think that is a fair proposal.

Liberal utopian big cities have been sliding down hill my entire life. Anyone who hasn't seen this nonsense coming has had their head in the sand for a while.

If this keeps up, the large liberal cities will end up looking like Escape From New York. Without an active, motivated police force, it won't take long.

Yep, Austin's property values could have a very long way to fall. Lots of folks have a lot to lose, including one of my kids. I told them to sell a while back, but they knew better. (And she's the one that listens the best to me.)

Wonder if the state has the power to unseat city councils and mayors?

They are complete idiots to propose all that mess and vote on it! All they have to do is just ban crime in that city and then you wont have crime and therefore wont need police. Its a win win for everyone!!! Putting all those restrictions on police is silly when you don't even need police if you would just ban crime! Geeez guys it aint that hard!!

That $100 million will disappear like campaign promises. Every nutjob contractor with a new and innovative non lethal restraint system will be lining up their pockets with city money. Welcome to the petri dish, beware of the black mold.

They are all talk. I challenge them to put their money where their mouth is and not hire for a year.
