I've been toying with the idea of buying a property in another state for a while, and would love some input from folks here who may have experience with this. Im a Texas resident and will be for the foreseeable future, but Im looking for a place I can get away to and relax, and eventually build a retirement home on. Here are factors Im looking at/looking for advice on, in order of importance.
1. Non-resident hunting rights- Im looking to buy a property that I can reasonably hunt elk on, or use as an access point to "walk-on" to elk habitat. With that in mind, what states have the best set up for a non-resident property owner to be likely or guaranteed to get a tag for their own property/ for the unit their property is in?
2. Taxes- Obviously some states are better that others on this than others
3. Travel from DFW- Id love to be able to drive there in a day from the DFW, but the other two are way more long-term important
Any suggestions for states or specific units in certain states to look into would be greatly appreciated!

Both high on my list. NM due to travel time and taxes, but I can barely make heads or tails of what my tag situation would be, other than it depends on where in the state the place would be

NM on smaller acreage, you might draw unit wide tag in essential unit, key being might. Large acreage probably get ranch tags. Large is where the win is
CO no real advantage at ownership out side of land owner tag draw.. but like smaller acreage NM it’s just a separate draw.
Honestly you can buy some pretty impressive landowner unit wide Elk tags in New Mexico for what a yearly small land note Would cost.
You could hunt 37, 36 or 17 for 6-8k a year, and truly be hunting big high density bulls

Not a bad idea, but I feel like buying those tags is sort of like renting- Im not building any equity or anything like that, and I have nothing waiting when I retire

Am I missing something there?

Yes, on Private land it’s OTC with a regional quota. Once quota is met season is closed.
I pretty much can hunt pronghorn, elk, mule deer and Whitetails on my ranch in panhandle. My elk are sparse but I’ve had opportunity. Southwest Olkla has a higher population also

Wyoming isn't for you, you must be a resident of the state to draw a tag . If not living there as a permanent resident you are a non res and will pay non res license fees. To become a permanent res you must live in the state for 1 year before applying for res license.

Around Garland Colorado there are a lot of 5 acres parcels for $4-5K if you don't want to pay much. but MY PROBLEM is years ago you could have a hunting CABIN. with an outhouse out back. I was looking around Terlingua/Big Bend but even there you really can't have a cabin any more- everything is a miniature house with septic field, water system, etc. Years ago you could put up a plywood shack for a couple of hundred bucks, bring in water, use an outhouse (today I guess a composte or chemical would work), Coleman lantern, wood stove- "roughing it:" was part of the fun. If vandals burned the place down- not much was lost. THERE HAS to be some place like that left. Fur trappers used to have long lines with a couple of camps. Ranches used to have line cabins for guys fixing the fences. Now a days I've called various counties and as I said- you have to essentially built a house. If anyone knows where I can build a "camp" much obligaged pard..

New Mexico, property taxes are reasonable and the reasons as stated above. Small acreage properties with elk habitat are semi reasonable, but as stated above, why? Our reason, the summers with highs in the low 80's beat the 110 in Abilene.
For a retirement area. medical has to be on the list, if my health goes south and we are in Ruidoso, it means a care flight to El Paso, Lubbock or Albuquerque.
State resident? Until you retire that will be a tough one, besides New Mexico has income tax, but still can be less than Texas property tax rates, also their sales taxes are lower than ours. . .

To become a permanent res you must live in the state for 1 year before applying for res license. For the licenses true but landowner tags are strictly based on acreage owned. You need to own at least 160 acres and be able to demonstrate 2000 use days by the game animal you hunt. Non resident landowners have first priority in the draw for the unit they where they own land.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

You still pay NR fees but yes, you have a real advantage to drawing tags.

What a great question. I have retired to Texas after serving in the Army for 24 years, still work of course. I often think about owning hunting land, but it seems the prices in Texas just keep going up. Plus I don't want to buy a ranch near the border and have some drug cartel or Coyotes kill me or start living in my cabin while I am away. What about Montana, Idaho, North or South Dakota? Anyone familiar with their policies?

It's a nice area, but deer hunting is not very good in the NW. SW Arkansas has some great deer hunting and big trees. Most of my family is from Arkansas and I hunt there every year...also, most places in Arkansas the land is cheaper than Texas. It's a great place to own. OP, what kind of terrain do you prefer?
