These are the best looking rings in my opinion for a classic look. Way cleaner than even the Leupold twist crookeds.

Edit: heck I didn’t look at your link to start with. The ones you’ve listed look just like the Talley.

I ended up ordering the Talley LWs for three rifles. Waiting on them to get here.

I’ve never been unhappy with the Talleys and I can’t say that about much. They just go great with a wood stock.

I got the scopes and rings, should be picking up the two rifles from the ffl tomorrow! I’ve always just eyeballed it, but want to do these right with correct torques, perfectly level and all that.
So I’ll be reaching out for a little help on here soon if I can get it.

Went with Talley lightweight rings btw. They have the built in base.

Anyone interested in properly mounting (and maybe bore sighting) three rifles for a case of beer or something?

There is a ton of value in investing in a Wheeler Fat wrench and installing with the proper torque specs for whatever rings you choose.

The RIGHT way to level a scope is this:
1. Set your rifle up properly to fit you and maintain your natural point of aim
2. while you're behind the rifle maintaining natural point of aim, set the scope on and move it back and forth till you have proper eye relief
3. use a plum bob. while you're holding your rifle in natural point of aim, level the reticle to the fall of gravity.

The human brain is capable of judging reticle cant with surprising accuracy. Most issues come from user error and the rifle not being setup from the start to fit the shooter and maintain the natural point of aim. You don't need a bunch of levels to do this, put more than 1 level on your rifle and you'll find quickly that they'll never match up anyhow. At a bare minimum just level the bottom of your scope up to the top of the receiver or rail with a stack of business cards or a set of feeler guages.

Brownell's has a 1" lapping tube. What do most of you use who lap the rings?

The plastic levels are worthless but the rest is solid:

cbump, your mileage may vary, but I think one of mine was a little warped or its magnet doesn't sit right. It just always seems like they don't agree with each other. One on fhe gun and one on the scope, they didn't agree when IMO everything was level.

Got two done. Had to lap the weatherby just barely. Didn’t have to on the browning.

Also the longer screws that caught appear to go all the way to the bolt not allowing it to open.

So ones too short and ones to long? Did you try switching places with them.

Yeah I played with it some but it appears the two short ones have to go in the rear base (but the circled one won’t go). The two longer ones have to go in the front it seems just due to receiver thickness.
But the rear hole in the front base goes through and contacts the bolt. The front hole on the front base is the only one not all the way through the receiver but then the longer screw stands up out of the base.

I had to give it a break before I get mad.

Separate question, is it normal to not have to adjust anything on bore sighting?

Not normal, but a well drilled rifle, good rings, and a properly centered scope will do it.

I’ve never had that issue with Talley screws. Any chance the ones you ordered aren’t for the exact rifle. Maybe a different generation. I don’t know.

I’m think so but not sure.

It’s a 1982 (i think) Winchester model 70 featherweight .30-06 (sn: G1549294) and Talley LWs model number 940702
which on the package says 1” Winchester 70 w/ .860 rear.

The bore sight thing was with the weatherby.

So, you have one screw too long? Am I reading that correctly?

If so, grind some off. It is not uncommon.

I know it's a pain, and you might not have a thread pitch gauge. But you could order another one too long and grind it down to fit, also. Not the way things are supposed to be, coming out of the package, but that's the quickest fix.

Short screws go in the front mount and long ones go in the rear mount. I learned the hard way.

Thank you sir. Talley actually wrote me back already at 0641 on a Sunday morning saying the same thing. Gonna try that today. In my mind that doesn’t make sense haha. Feel dumb if that’s all it is.

Kudos to Talley cs.
