What’s the most economical way to clear 6’ tall weeds, saplings (3-4” in diameter, 10’ tall) and undergrowth? I know a dozer would work awesome but this can be done with a small tractor and brush hog, correct? Trying to clear about 15 lanes, 200yds long by ~40’ wide.
Thanks.

Someone else will chime in that knows way more than me. Ill just say no to the tractor. At least on mesquite even an inch or two you cant get a bucket to cut or dig effectively. Lighter underbrush maybe. I know its not mesquite but 3 to 4" is an obstacle. If someone has an answer im curious.

Depends on what your definition of a small tractor is and how close together the saplings are. I cleared a similar area with my 40hp tractor and 6' brush hog but the saplings weren't 4" in diameter. Mine has a clutch and bogged down often. It was pretty thick. They were more like 2". 4" is more like a tree.

Now that I think about it, 4” is bigger than what I’m wanting to clear. Probably 95% would be 1-2” in diameter with a 3-4” possibly thrown in the mix. The vast majority I can smash over by stomping and the rest I can easily crush down with my Tacoma.

I’m not too familiar with farming equipment or the like.
Thanks.

Hire the skidsteer guy with the brush cutter. The mulcher is harder to find, and probably more expensive by the hour. The brush cutter is more common. $4k implement, rather than $40k implement. The brush cutter will handle what you're wanting cut down.

Yup. Hire a skid steer with attachment.

I had a guy quote me 150 per machine hour. Could get a lot done in a 10 hour day.

I watched a guy with a Bobcat with some sort of attachment go through a pasture of scrub mesquite that was about 2 to 3 inch thick trunks. It looked like he was using a lawn mower on a front yard.

Did you ever get your stumps removed?

As of now, the plan is to rent a skid steer and brush cutter for a week. Thanks!

I can rent a skid steer and a brush cutter for about that price for a week so we’re looking at doing that. Thanks!

That’s what it looked like on the videos I just watched. Pretty impressive! I’m not crazy fast with a skid steer but I’ve driven them before. I can handle that piece of equipment well enough for what we’re needing it for.

If you can rent this setup you are good to go !
We have one we use on a tractor and it does the job.

i would really really like an update as you go to help me make decisions.
For now to be clear, they will still come back up correct? Also you wont be able to readily drive over...?

I have way less trees and way more brush than in that video. That wouldn’t work very well for my situation but I appreciate the input!

I've used one and they work great for stuff like in the video. I used an Ambusher. One word of advice. Be careful and watch out for wasp nests. Stir them up and you are stuck in the cab. They will have a field day with you. Goggles and mask. Have fun!
