I have noticed that off lake Ray Roberts area and near Greenbelt trail there are some wild pecan trees. Anyone know what kind of pecan tree this is? Trying to figure out what kind so i can try and maybe plant near one to cross polinate on my land. Jay

They will all produce native pecans until grafted. Plant one and graft whatever pecan you want onto it.

They're called native Pecan. They genetically differ slightly all over the state. Family ~ Juglandaceae Genus ~ Carya Species ~ illinoinensis
It won't matter what variety pecan you plant, cross pollination between varieties does not result in any hybridization.

Might try calling your County agent to be sure.

Might try calling your County agent to be sure. My daddy came home from the big war and took an AG course as pert of the G I bill. He learned to graft thre there. There must be at least a dozen on my sister's farm now.

Will the native trees pollinate one bought in a nursery, say a Pawnee for example, or vice versa store bought pollinate native?

The trees will be natives unless you graft them. Great shade trees, good tasting pecans, but hell to shell and small.

Will the native trees pollinate one bought in a nursery, say a Pawnee for example, or vice versa store bought pollinate native? Yes natives will pollenate other varieties & vice versa. Trees need to be within 400' (feet) for consistent pollination. Less is better. The pollen can travel up to a mile or so if wind conditions are right at the right timing. This far apart crop will vary considerably, usually being poor. There are a few self pollinating varieties, but, crop will vary from year to year, when conditions are poor you can end up with little to no crop. Generally speaking nut quality is not as good on self pollinating. Most folks plant desirable varieties in at least pairs unless another pecan is on a neighboring property within 400'.

I had the worst webworms ever last year. They just stated again. My lucky day. The Pecan Doctor from Simington is in my area. He's spraying mine a little later with Thuricide for $19 per tree.

If he has a sprayer that can get to the tops of those trees, $19 a tree is a bargain. Nice score Bill.

There was once a crop dusted that sprayed from above. This is more effective because the spray gets underneath the leaves and is not as easily washed off. Here you go.

It fell at 5:30. I thought it was a big clap of thunder. I'm definitely calling the man to cut it up and haul it of, then grind the stump. Another day, another dollar.
