Looking for a powder for .45 colt with a 260 to 300 grain jacketed bullet and want to push it between 1000-1200. I’m new to reloading for pistols so I’m looking for recipes. Want to load up some ruger loads as well for when I’m in bear country. It’s going through a Ruger Bisley Blackhawk. Any input would be appreciated.

I shoot 300 gr cast in my Bisley powered by H110. Why only jacketed?

I was going to mention the H110 but like you I shoot hard cast 300s. I’d say of the powders I’ve tried so far it has given the best results. Don’t load it down and give it a good crimp. No experience with jackets. I’ve only loaded the 300s and 360s with it in the 45 Colt. I don’t know about the lighter bullets.

I use H110 for the 44 Mag with 300gr jacketed bullets, For the 45 Colt in Rugers Hodgdon lists H110, H4227 and Lil'gun all max loads listed are right at the 1200fps from a 7.25 inch barrel.

Yup.

FWIW, I had a 4” .45 Redhawk for a bit. 255 grain Buffalo Bore loads were running 1400 FPS out of that gun. Some Ruger only loads will really make that gun come alive!

I’m not opposed to hard cast and actually think it’s a good choice. I would like to find a nice hard cast flat nose bullet with gas checks. I don’t know enough about the hard cast to reload them yet so I will research it. A friend gave me a bunch of jacketed bullets so that’s where I was gonna start. I would like to run some hard cast 300 grainers around 1100 or so, think that would be great for a woods load. I appreciate the input and if anyone has a good hard cast load, please let me know.

Maybe it’s a dumb question, but is the process different for reloading hard cast bullets? I ask because I have never done it.

These are the 315 gr WFN from Missouri Bullet. As others have stated, a stiff load of W296/H110 will get you where you want to go. They are a handful.

I can tell you through experimentation that past 360g is where the 45 Colt and H110 loses its efficiency. It will punt the 360g out of Redhawk Alaskan at about 880fps. That’s a 2.5” barrel.

I only use Cast Performance Bullets which is now owned by Grizzly. I also don’t load outside of “Ruger Only” specs. The 300g CPB is coming out of my 20” Marlin at 1600.

Don’t forget to crimp the snot out of it when using H110.

You ask if the process is different and the answer is maybe. I buy pre-lubed bullets so it is not. If you don’t you have to lube them yourself. As I stated above, I only buy CPB, but I didn’t specify why. They make a top quality bullet ready to load. All their bullets are gas check as well, all of them are the correct hardness.

I have bought cheaper bullets to find weight from bullet to bullet varying by as much as 7g. I’ve also had bullets too soft lead the bore and forcing cone. If you’re going to try hard cast start with a quality bullet. Then decide if it’s worth the cost or if you want to try something cheaper.

Love a stout .45colt. Preparing to start down the 255gn keith path. Anyone have a good load for these? Going to run them through an old Blackhawk 7.5" and a new stainless 4" redhawk.

I appreciate all the input. I now have some 300 hard cast on order and picked up some H110, looking forward to getting it all put together and finding an accurate load.

I load some lazer cast 250 grain round flat points with HS-6 around 900 fps for my plinking rounds. For my full power/hunting loads I shoot 240 grain sierra jacketed hollow cavity over 20 or so grains of 4227... not sure if its Hodgdons or IMR, been a while since I loaded any of them. I like the hollow cavity as they really expand, get close to double caliber expansion where most other pistol bullets like XTP's and hard cast look dang near like you could load them again.

Bore fit matters just as much or more than alloy hardness when it comes to leading. If bullets are undersized for the bore, you’re going to have issues. It’s often necessary to go .001-.003” bigger on cast than their jacketed counterparts.

Yes and no. Gas checks allow you to shoot a properly fit cast bullet faster before leading occurs.

This was about an hour ago. For reference the pig was about 40 pounds at best. The load was a low power 255 running about 800 out of the rifle if I had to guess. It did kill the little fella but it did not exit. I know this is almost irrelevant to the thread but it was a first kill for a kid I know, and I almost set him up too lite on the load.

How far was the shot?

Surprised it didn't go through, cast bullets have always surprised me with penetration.

About 45 yards. If there was an exit I somehow overlooked it. That’s the only hole I saw.

Not doubting, just curious

That little rifle looks like a whole lot of fun. If I ever buy another rifle a lever 45 colt is on the list!

Boolit fit is Paramount. I shoot .453 plain based in my Marlin, homemade loob. No leading after hundreds of rounds. 45 Colt rifle is awesome. Load lite or top end.

I am seriously thinking about a 45 colt rifle, It would be a great addition to the Bisley.

I load 25 gr Imr 4227 with 250 gr XTP for 1185 fps. It is one hole accurate with 3 shots using the Burris FF2 on my Ruger 7.5” Hunter. Love it!!

It certainly would. I have an 1892 that I hunt with. I normally carry it to the blind along with my Ruger Hunter 7.5”. Both are 45 Colt.
