I have a yildiz 410 with at least a couple thousand rounds through it and no problems. Biggest issue for your boy will be length of pull on a full size 20. You may need to cut the stock down so a nine year old can shoulder it and cheek the stock comfortably and reach the controls with decent form. He will progress quicker that way. If you do cut it, drill the butt plate screws deeper than the length you shorten. When he grows it will go back with a perfect fit. Start him with 3/4 oz 20 gauge loads. That is the equivalent of shooting a 28 gauge. We are looking at the youth size 20 gauge. It is still a hair long but I am hopeful by September it will fit him. Weight and balance seemed good for him. Plan is to start with reduced recoil rounds.

Enjoy the ride RC. Some of the best memories of my life are bird hunting with my son while he was growing up. Once they find out about girls and start driving.... and it happens quick.

Enjoy the ride RC. Some of the best memories of my life are bird hunting with my son while he was growing up. Once they find out about girls and start driving.... and it happens quick. I am pumped. He just recently really started showing interest in hunting and I want to encourage it as I can. We went and looked at a hunting lease yesterday and he is excited at the possibility of getting on. He turns 10 next month and I figure I only have 5 or 6 good years left. Gotta jump on it now!

Get plenty of father/son range time in with it. DO NOT start out as a teacher (except for safety reminders if needed)....just go shoot as fellow shooters/hunters getting ready for the season. Be ready with advice when asked.

Remington 1100 in a 20 gauge. Especially a LT-20. Shot gun for a lifetime. Semi-auto has way less felt recoil than a pump or sxs.

I suggest going the 20 gauge route. Down the road your pocketbook will appreciate having more affordable shells than the .410 or 28 gauge shells. While young I suggest using the low recoil shells. Winchester makes a 980 fps round. Recoil reduction in shells is achieved either by reducing the amount of shot, reducing velocity, or a combination of both. https://winchester.com/products/ammunition/shotshell/aa/aa20fl8 Winchester AA is some of the finest shotgun ammo made. Currently there is a $2 per box on the Winchester AA shells which helps with cost. As your son ages then moving into regular ammo is easily done.

my sons are 9 now too. they will shoot 22, and a 410 single shot i have, but they don't like the youth 870 20ga i have yet. its more recoil than they are interested in and its a little heavy for them. for now i just let them shoot what they like and wait for them to grow into the other. i'm trying to remember...i think i shot my first doves with a 16ga my dad has. I was a bigger kid at the time though than my boys are yet.
