I'm involved in managing a 2,500 acre HF ranch in Junction, that has a coyote problem. We've seen several on game cameras and the blackbuck population is taking a hit. I just wanted to see what experience people have here on the THF with those different methods of coyote control and see what recommendations are out there. Not looking for a 'try all three' type of answer - I'm looking for a rank order of things to try. Thanks!

Snares. Guard animals in my experience won't solve the problem especially with BB.

Another vote for snares. More productive and you can see what your success rate is. I had a donkey in a pasture with cows that was protective for sure but never saw evidence of a dead yote.

Snares and M44s. Snares for crossfences and outside access control, cyanide guns for the ones living in your place already.

Get a knowledgeable trapper to come in and let them do their thing or teach you how. Many of them won't fall for a snare. Footholds, done with a good set, will take care of them.

we had good success using the government trapper in our area for coyotes. Our usage was a number of years back and I thought funded thru the county (or counties) and/or TPWD and national resources. After a quick search, appears Kimble county actually has a cost associated to be a member. Kimble County Predator Management Boardalso might try the Texas Trappers and Fur Hunters Association

We've been using footholds for 40 years, without any more success than guns or snares. They are pretty smart animals, darn it. Did get a bobcat about this time last year in a foothold.

Most counties out here did away with the Government trappers and started organizations that collect funds based on ranch size and pay out bounties. Snares are very effective while llamas and guard dogs can help to keep predators away from sheep or goats, not so much for free ranging animals. They don't kill coyotes as they cannot catch them, just try to keep out of the herds. Adios, Gary

My FIL has donkeys, about 10 donkeys on 200 acres w the cattle
And in 15 years, I never saw a donkey chase a coyote.
Not even once and yes I would see coyotes on this place

Thanks for this info! We have been calling & shooting, but not really putting a dent in the population. I used to trap muskrats as a teenager. But, quickly learned that if not done right, you're wasting your time. I will reach out. Thanks!

Miles not at all. Jenny donkeys, large ones will run off and kill coyotes or dogs that look like them. Mostly they are good at chasing them away. Snares are good. But they catch all.

I couldn't tell you what is best, but if you put out mules they will kill some of the coyotes. I guess the coyotes are not as slick as we, or they, believe. Mules do more than bray. Probably not the answer to protect free ranging wild game animals though.

2500 acres can hold a few packs. If you’re high fenced then I would start with making damn sure you have no holes or gaps, fix those, then focus on killing the ones inside the fence. I have a friend that has done this, fixed every fence then spent 6 years hunting, trapping, every coyote on the property, made a tremendous difference for his operations

Temic works pretty good.... I think it might be slightly illegal though.
