If you had a choice 6mm creedmoor, 6.5 creed or 6.5 prc. Rifle will be Seekins Havoc Main purpose will be shooting steel out to 1000 yards, training my kiddo. Also shooting game in Texas at normal ranges.
Scope will be Nightforce. Ammo will be hand loaded.

6mm pushing 105 Hybrid, 108 ELDM, etc. I'm about to build one myself for the exact same purpose.

I'd go 6.5 Creedmoor just because the cost of ammo and availability and since you're hunting Texas game, excluding Nilgai. I have a 6.5 Creedmoor and a 6.5 PRC. I like them both but if I'm going to be shooting a lot I bring the 6.5CM.

6mm, most kids are scared of noise first recoil second. Noise is easy, less recoil the better while they learn fundamentals IMO.

This is my POV too....had you not mentioned the kid I wouldn't leaned toward the 6.5. Another option would be load the 6.5 w/ a lighter bullet to assist in recoil...maybe a 108-123 But full load you'll be better off with the 6 for a kid.

I’d do the 6mm just for the savings on cost of bullets.. lots of good choices in the 6mm

I hear H4350 is the powder for 6.5cm, which i assume is also the case for 6mm CM. What are other powders for 6mm creedmoor that have worked well for others?
I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

I sold my 6mm CM but I used several powders although I never tried Reloder 23. Reloder 26 shot well but I ended up with Reloder 16
The 6.5 with 120/123 gr bullets can be easy on the recoil and reach 1000 no problem at all. Just pick a powder like Varget/AR Comp and run the 123's around 2875. IIRC Hornady actually ran Varget for a while in the 6.5 in the lighter bullets.... back during the period they were putting load data on the boxes.
PS: I have been shooting a lightweight 6.5PRC hunting rifle recently... under 8lbs with scope and it has some recoil that kids probably wouldn't enjoy. After all it burns around 60gr of powder so be aware of that.

Ok, I ended up ordering the 6mm Creed Seekins, with the intention of ordering the 6.5 PRC and .300 PRC after I get back into the swing. Then kiddo will take over the 6mm Creed. Figure can’t ever have to many lol

Isn’t the 1000 yard bench record held by the 115 DTAC with a 6mmBR AI? Any reason that won’t work on steel?
