Chad keeps getting me pumped to use my suppressed 16" 308 with 150 Gold Dots next year.

It depends on your use, but I like a 16" 1:10 twist. Since I'm accepting lower speed out of a shot barrel, I want to keep my BC as high as possible to allow me to carry speed/energy as far out as possible. I have a custom .308 16" bolt gun I shoot out to 1100 pretty regularly. you can go with a lighter bullet/ slower twist to get speed if you aren't shooting very far and want to have easier holds, but you'll sacrifice energy at a longer range. If you handload, you can also play with faster burning powders to maximize your speed since a lot of factory ammo for .308 is made assuming a 20 or 22-inch barrel

This is a hunting forum, not just a long range group. Short barrels are super convenient in hunting rifles.

I've noticed that the mention of shooting at "long" range seems to trigger some folks on this forum. Look, stretching out your rifles capabilities will make you a better overall marksman and really make you appreciate getting the most out of your equipment. I could understand neutering your rifle if you feel the need to run a can at the end...(I personally think its mostly just part of the growing trend of grown men wanting to play operator with their tacticool toys; like those stupid little stubby ARs)...but don't knock those who really want to get the most out of every shot. I'll be sticking with the setup which gives me better performance and accept the extra bit of noise. In response to the original topic, sometimes a shorter rifle is handy, and since we are talking 308...on a normal 308 hunting rifle a 20" barrel is a good compromise and will almost never be to unwieldy.

Lot of people shoot long range. He said his range with 500 max so 16in. If you tell me 1k I am looking for 20-24 inch barrel or switching to a better cartridge for long range

Yeah guess I'm just old school. And grouchy. Carry on.
