From Wikipedia: The thick growth formed an almost impenetrable barrier for early American explorers and travelers. Washington Irving, in 1835, described it as "like struggling through forests of cast iron."* * Irving, A Tour on the Priaries, Ch. 21. I bet they cursed this land.

If they had more than a horse they definitely hated that land.

Spent around 30 years hunting in mainly Jack and some in Montague county, that area is my favorite part of Texas. Good picture and I bet you or someone else thinned that area out. Especially back in the 80's and 90's my best friend was from both counties and we explored the heck out of it, a lot of areas that have not been thinned out are so dense with the Post & Black Jack Oaks with brier vines and other growth it is a severe beating to traverse through and some areas dang near impossible and that is where mother natures lightning then fire would keep the growth in check.

I have actually heard that the underbrush wasn't near as bad 100 years ago because it burned off regularly. Nice pic though, spent most of my life living or hunting Jack, Clay and Archer counties. Love that part of the country.

Agree that it looks like some maintenance was done. I have a place South of Bowie that isn't near that clear. Also, see a cam on a tree.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.
