All of my equipment, instructions, and shared knowledge came from these folks. A retired couple in their 60's. Super nice people, that have been extremely helpful the whole way. And I will have to have Scott come back out one more time. They are based out of Greenville, TX. http://rainwaterranch.net/products.html

the LO on my Ozona place built them a small cabin, I would guess ~20'x20', metal roof with gutters on both side that drains into a ~2000 gallon black water storage tank under the rear deck. They put a chlorine tablet (or Clorox) into the tank occasionally to kill algae. Then they have a 12 volt pump (like in a travel trailer) with on demand water to their bathhouse for shower and toilet. I think they carry drinking water in a 5 gallon igloo.

One thing cistern water will do is to make you stop, look, and think about your water consumption. I realized how much my household was wasting. I have a meter on my softener that shows usage. I discussed this with my wife and kid and we were able to drastically reduce water usage by making a few small changes.

I discussed this with my wife and kid and we were able to drastically reduce water usage by making a few small changes. I think most households are guilty of this. Turn on the faucet and it is always there. That is what is called taking something for granted. We are already pretty conservative with water usage on the current house. My two girls need to shorten their showers, that's about the only change I need to have happen when we move. Now that the house has a roof on it, I need to catch that water as well. Tank capacity is the bulk of the money. So every roof you have might as well be contributing to filling tanks. If you're paying less than $0.50 per gallon of tank capacity, you are getting a fair deal. Make a little extra money, add tanks. Before you know it, you've got more water than you need and it is all yours, and it is cleaner than every other option. I do not water grass, but I would like to water trees and a garden with raw roof water. So the shop water is the potable water, the house water will be for irrigation and herbicides. And I will valve it so that if I need to refill the potable water system I can send water from the house over there via gravity flow.

Have been using a 10,000 gallon potable system for the last 12 years for my 2 cabins. Love it, great system. Check out Rainwater Ranchers, they have a lot of good info.

On the old place we had I installed gutters and a 2000 gallon cistern, to collect rainwater. It kept us in water for the cabin. We did haul drinking water. The co-op water was expensive, so we turned it off and within 2 years the collection system paid for itself.

My well, when dug, produced 1/10 gpm. Probably improved since then. I pump it into a 2,500 gallon tank. So, I had to wait a week or so before using it.
The well supply people in Bowie told me that the “average” family uses about 140 gallons per day. Some of that might change with lawn watering, etc.
If you can somehow impound all of the rain, it will go a long way in cutting the water bill/usage.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

100 square feet of roof, 1" of rain = 63 gallons.
My shop is 6000 square feet of roof.
60 x 63 gallons x 42 inches of rain per year = 158,760 gallons for the year.
I can't hold all that, and we need 36,000 gallons for the house usage, for a year.
Build any roof, gutter it, and buy tanks.

Here's a very informative document: Texas Rainwater Harvesting PDFWe have 5400 gallons of rainwater storage at the ranch because the well is too salty. Planning on expanding capacity when we move up there.

Anyone using a system to provide water to your hunting cabin ? We did one at our ranch house. We have a 3500 gallon concrete cistern that is fed by a 30x120' barn. We also have a 2000 gallon black poly tank that is fed by the roof of the house. put a booster pump on it and it runs the house/yard just like a well would. Rainwater is very soft so its easy on fixtures. We don't stay there much and don't have a washer/dryer there so we have never come close to running out of water.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.
