You will hate an AR10 if you have to carry it far or often, I have two of them but they were built for stand hunting not packing around. The AR15 platform is lighter and easier to get around. Then you need to pick a caliber....6.8/6.5 Grendel/300 Hamr are the three I'd pick from...you can eliminate the Hamr if you plan on using the gun for much over 200y, just not it's wheelhouse.

AR10-choose the caliber you like. I started with 308. My latest upper is a 16” 6.5CM. Love it. 7mm08 will be my next upper. One of the cool things about the AR platform is choose the upper for that day and snap it on and go shoot....

I agree you will like the weight of an AR15 better and 6.8 or 300 HAMR will perform flawlessly for your need, I own both. You can buy or build a pretty light weight AR10 if you stay away from long heavy barrels and choose quality light weight rails and butt stock......

I would want a Winchester model 100 in .308 or .284 win.

Second choice a browning BAR in .270

270 or 30-30 are not calibers. They are cartridges.

You guys are doing a TERRIBLE job of helping to enable this gentleman. Tell him what he needs to hear so he can buy the gun he wants!

Hell is wrong with ya'll? This is not THF that I am used to.

Edit- except a couple of you well heeled gentlemen with all the toys... my apologies.

I’d say .308 as it’s big enough for both and for the simple reason that anyone who sells ammo, will always have .308 something, on hand.

The OP has a 270, so what in the world would be markedly better? I used a 270 for at least 35 years. So...use the 270 and 130 gr cup and core bullets and quit worrying about what else you might need. If you want to shoot through a hog sideways or longways, a Nosler Partition would work just fine, though I used Nosler Ballistic Tips.

I mostly shoot a 260 these days, but do believe the 270 has a bigger thump on hogs. That doesn’t matter too much on deer since either has more energy than needed.

AR 15 in 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC or 300 HAMR if shooting inside 200 yards, if going longer get the Grendel. On an AR 10 there are several, 6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08, 308 will all work on hogs and deer

Your .270 would be great for both deer and hogs. Just about any of the commercial ammo in 130-150 grain would work.
There are plenty of semi auto rifles to choose from in either the traditional style or AR platforms.
Personally I like a .243 or 308 for both deer and hogs.

Whatever you select, just make sure that you install a muzzle brake / suppressor combo. It will increase your hog count.

Buy one of every caliber like the rest of us. Then get a safe that gives room for expansion. Next, start handloading.

.308 AR would do. 06 if you wanted something like a Garland, BAR, etc.

To the original poster ---- really digging your two classy/classic 30-30 and .270 options. I'm old school like you and hunt deer/hogs with my .35 Marlin 336 lever 85% of the time. I might reach for my 30.06 Marlin bolt rifle for wide open hunts. Dont care to try something different or more modern like many of the posters here when these calibers have performed flawlessly for a century of outdoorsmen (30 years for me). Will be interesting to see what you choose. Good luck, man!
