Signs you may not live in the country:
1) HOA
Your turn. 2) You have a wooden or wrought iron fence in your backyard. 3) You're worried about (or you should be) a 'gator eating your neighbor's kids close to your "dock". 4) you’ re walking distance from Aldi and Walmart but the cops wont let you drive your gator to it 5)You have a “pond” in your back yard instead of a stock tank.

Most of you don't even list your location. I first listed Richmond because I got my mail from the Richmond post office. I changed my profile to Katy- Fulshear after they built the Katy- Fulshear Walmart 3 miles from me. The center is called KFC. I first thought we were herring a new Kentucky Fried Chicken Joint. How does my location help the lurkers who have chimed in on this thread?. Sounds like whiskey talking Did your mailing address change because some developer is ignorant in naming a shopping center?

Why not just take the settlement, sell the house, and move on? Long story short I did not sue the manufacturer the insurance company did. The insurance company shared some of the settlement with me (which was absolutely amazing considering they were in no way obligated). Regardless, I need to live where I do and the housing options are limited. Clarification: I knew nothing about the suit until the end which is when I was told I would be getting money for it. I'm not sure how common this is. I have a friend who is an executive for the insurance company. Not sure if he pulled some strings or if I got lucky. How were they able to sue radiant barrier manufacturer? What Did they do wrong?

That is exactly what a quail hunting friend discussed when his wife was planning his daughters wedding. Also, you and several others gave us facts. Others gave us fiction. Still waiting for Beaver to get back to us with a price where we can compare and contrast. One percent deductible or two percent?

How were they able to sue radiant barrier manufacturer? What Did they do wrong? I only know what the adjuster told me which didn't make sense. Seemed to me to be an installation issue not a manufacturing issue. So maybe she misspoke in stating who the suit was against though she never mentioned the builder or any business related to construction. But here's the issue. Adjacent boards have "clips" in between. Those clips were metal. There were two lightning strikes according to fire investigators. So when lightening struck, the way it was described to me, there were electric charges jumping between the clips of non-neighboring boards. Sounds far-fetched to me what do I know?! Anyway, the logic is supported by the following. Pretty much all of the roof burned but in the area where there was no fire damage the clips had burn marks around them, the wood was charred. That creates two arguments. 1) The metal clips created a "network" of points of ignition of fire and 2) Plastic clips should have been used. Again, those points in my opinion point to installation not manufacturing. Irony: the new radiant barrier has metal clips.

Wow that is crazy, guess just the perfect storm for something like that to happen. Glad it worked out for you in the end though.

MM, can you name your insurance co? I’m in the process of getting HO quotes. Got my Travelers renewal notice, also got quotes from Local Farm Bureaus agent, and State Farm. Prices are not close, coverages are not equal either. This is gonna take more time than I wanted to spend on this project.

My current Travelers policy is through an independent agent. I guess I should check my options with him before going elsewhere.

I’m bringing this thread back. MM, can you name your insurance co? At the time, 2013, my insurance was with Geico and the company providing the coverage for the policy (sorry, I don't know the proper term) was ASI Lloyds. My insurance has since changed so I don't know if Geico still has the relationship with ASI Lloyds. Ask Traveler's for a "declaration" (if I recall correctly) and send that to who you want quotes from asking them to match the coverage and give a quote.

The problem with the difference in quotes is every company want to insure the house for a different value. Since it’s paid for I don’t want to be over insured. I was in the mindset of if it burns down I’ll take the money and sell the lot. But I know of a couple folks that have gone through fires in the last 18 months. One was a lightning strike, other electrical fire. Neither was a total loss. This has changed my mind about minimal coverage. And I have a fire station a little more than 1 mile away, also fire hydrant across the street.

If you intend on securing replacement cost coverage (sucker if you don't), the insurance companies will want to insure the home you are actually in and not the home you would build now with different needs or the home you would want to cash out of.

After all the smoke has cleared, State Farm has the most coverage for the best price. I used them 25 years ago, but changed when they wouldn’t cover my roof after a hailstorm. That’s pretty much a non issue now with the 1% deductible as far as I’m concerned. Anybody have experience with State Farm and a large claim?

I've tried every insurance company I can find to beat the price that I have with State Farm. They all say they can do it, but none have ever been able to. Apparently, I get some kind of discount for being a 40-year State Farm customer. I've had three large claims in 40 years, all hail storm roofs. They paid all after my deductible of course without any fuss.
