long (30'06 length) action. Very flat shooting, recoil not bad. Very expensive ammo and brass.

I think its a great round, perfect for hunting in Texas.

The case is very close to a 300 win mag or 7mm mag in fact I think its the same case. I am not a reloader my brother does that for me and if you check this post thanks again.

If I remember correctly it has about the same recoil as a .270.

Its a superb caliber, extremly fast and flat, moderate recoil. Its a great round for whitetail. Factory ammo is pretty high, but if you hand load you will produce a better load for a lot less than factory stuff.

I'm not a reloader, but I do have one. Looks to be a necked down 7mag casing.

I like the 257 Wby because the speed that it carries. It has as much downrange energy as a 270, but in a smaller bullet. I saw it mentioned that the recoil is about the same as a 270, and sure it depends on the rifle, but I don't see it to be much different than the 25-06 Rem. Very mild recoil. The ballistics of the 257 tells the tale of why it is so liked.

IMO - The only downfall to the 257 WBY is the cost and availability of ammo. Even if you are a reloader, I hear it is much more time consuming and expensive, compared to some of the more popular calibers.

Excellent round. Its like a 25-06 on steroids. Perfect gun for Texas IMO.

best way to put it. Love mine, and it is in the elcheapo vanguard model. The recoil really isn't noticeable and usually the ammo is easy to find for it.

It takes the same amount of time to reload as a .223,22-250,300whby, ect. New brass is kinda of pricey but it lasts a long time. It cost about a dollar a round to reload for after the brass has been purchased.

Great caliber but expensive ammo. Minimum recoil.

The .257 Weatherby Magnum cartridge case itself a shortened version of the .300 H&H Magnum case necked down to .257 caliber and blown out the full length of the case which then sports a double radius shoulder and shortened to 2.545" with a long neck.

257 Weatherby Magnum, 68.0 Grains of IMR4831, 100 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip or Partition. 3625 fps. Zero at 335, -5 inches at 400, -15 at 500, -35 at 600. My 2 cents.

Here is my bull getting shot with a 257 Weatherby Magnum and a 120 Partition at 563 yards.

For years the 257 Weatherby has been in a class of it's own, it's got power, it's got speed and a loyal following of hunters who enjoy it's capabilities. It’s the only 25 caliber that I would recommend for Elk. Theres a great story out there about Roy Weatherby taking his then wildcat calibers to Africa, the amount and size of the game that fell to one shot from his 257 was staggering. If I ever get to where I find the recoil on my 300 to be too much, I’ll step down to the 257.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

All this talk about expensive ammo leds me to this question, how much ammo do you need? I bought 3 box's of 150 grain Nosler Partitions for my 300 Weatherby, by the time I'm dead there will still be at least a box and a half left. And they're ammo holds it's value as well as they're rifles do.

i agree with hwyman, i shoot maybe half a box outta each of my deer rifles each season, unless i'm doing some major culling, then no more than a box. i shoot my .270 only 4 or 5 times a year. i buy good ammo that will give me the best performance, not what is the cheapest. what is the issue with ammo being expensive? i dont' know anyone who goes plinking with a .30-06?

I guess some of us shoot more than others. I spend time at the range, working on reloads for several rifles every year. And I spend time at the ranch shooting at longer ranges (for me) from hunting positions, with the rifle(s) I plan to use that year. Then there is that nasty job of continually putting pressure on the local hog population. It can add up. So I now you'd heard of someone who "plinks" with a 30/06 (and 270, and 280, and 264, and 257, etc )

your not plinking at that point, if your reloading and testiing rounds/whatnot, then thats another hobby.

in any case, some guns are more expensive to shoot than others. thats why majority of my non-trophy hunting goes to my .22-250, which i can buy for $15 a box.

cost and availability would not concern me whith a hunting caliber unless it was something that is not commercially available anymore

ok, call it plinking or reloading/testing or whatever.

I'll just throw out one thought. IMO, it's important to practice with the rifle you are going to use hunting at whatever ranges you anticipate shooting. Not too critical for sitting in a box blind watching a feeder 75 yards away.

But if the OP is going to buy a new 257WM, one would assume he will be hunting in open country and potentially be faced with a long shot. If so, he needs to get the rifle properly sighted in, and then actually shoot that gun at the ranges he intends to use it at. IMO, he will need to make sure he is able to place his shots properly from hunting positions at long range, and that the trajectory of the rifle compares to what the ballistics charts say.

This would require more than just a handful of shots each year.

YMMV

right about that... those charts tend to fib.

i agree about that, but i've done enough real world hunting, not just shooting from a blind or bench, to not make it matter.
