They shot out the pasture gate when I was driving the Mule in, it was dark. He ripped his skin on something...probably a tractor i mplement or sheet metal. Been treating it with vetericyn spray.

Call Amazon. I've heard that super glue would do the job but never tried it.

I would feel better if it was clean and closed up, but my dad said it would be best to leave it open and keep treating with vetercyin. We had a calf born with a raw open hole where his 'male organ ' should have been, treated it with vetercyn and it closed up quickly, but he died from other complications. Oh well, there is no arguing with dad.;)

Not a vet, did not sleep in a Holiday Inn last nigh, do not play a doctor on TV, but regardless of using Super Glue, Vet Bond, or stapler.....be sure you shave the area a little on each side so that no hairs are pinched in the closed skin...that guarantees longer healing time and makes infection more likely. The quicker you close it, the better. If the edges have dried, it will not heal as well.
I carry Vet Bond (have used it on myself), a stapler, a disposable razor, one of those cheap "A" battery Grooming pen\trimmer, and a small bottle of Bernadine in my dog bag.
We all need to practice Whoa more.

On cuts this big a vet would close it most of the way up and leave a tube in so that it can drain.
Ask me how I know.
I do most of my dog care myself but something this big could definitely use the attention of a vet so it can be closed properly and so you can get antibiotics.
Most rural vets that care for big animals will get this done for pretty cheap. City vets are stupid expensive and judgemental.
Take the advice for what you paid for it, free.
Hope your pup gets better soon.

I never heard of these staplers. Great idea. Hope your pup heals up ok. I got lucky. A NSTRA friend was married to a surgeon's PA. They used the staples but they couldn't be reused once they were opened. The friend gave me a couple of the staplers. I used the first one at a NSTRA trial on Morton Road near Katy on a GSP belonging to Scott Thomas. Scott left Katy and headed up to Kansas for a national championship trial. He took the dog to a vet up there. The vet looked at the cut and dismissed Scott without a charge, telling him that someone had done an excellent job. I was the designated stapler in NSTRA after that

Had a pup (16 weeks) tangle with either a hog or coon one night and got ripped up pretty bad on 2 legs, Vet said don't bother, the damage is too bad. The wife and youngest son used Vetericyn on him 3 times a day for about 3 weeks. Harley turns 8 in September, if you know what you are looking for you can see the scars but they are very faint. I started using that stuff when we had horses, it is pretty amazing.

Had one hit a fence and gashed his chest open like that, I cut the hunt short and took him to my vet thinking he would sew it up but he said it would heal better leaving it open. I kept it clean with peroxide and kept neosporin on it and it healed fine.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

I would've take him to the vet last night or ASAP, but it's me, VS. My dad's experience...I've told him several times at least clean it and close it up and treat it with vetercyin on the seam... But.......in the end it's not much of my call to make even though he's me and my brothers dog. I really would rather be safe than sorry.

Yeah, I would take him to the vet for that wound. That’s what I’m thinking also. It’s one thing to have a field kit for emergency’s to help your dog or yourself but after the sun comes up the next day, go see someone that can provide adequate care. Don’t take long term care advice from an Internet forum. Go see someone who does it for a living. Some here will argue that they did this and they did that but every situation is different. For some people a dog is a useful tool. For others they are true family members with skills. Just my

TCM3, are you and your brother youngsters? I'm 16, Brother's older than me by 6 years, we got both of these dogs as pups after our old dog died. I do most of their care taking since he works 12 or more hours a day. I asked him about taking chief to the vet, but He said 'see what dad says He seems to be doing better today than he was last night, he's way more mobile, we did give him 200 MG of Amoxocillan last night , and half today. And I have also been treating it with iodine. Like I said before I think it would be much better to close the wound, and treat the stitches or seam with the vetercyin...

Your dad should be proud. Common sense is certainly not the norm that I see these days. Keep up the good work and wise choices.

I always had someone to hold their mouths closed I hope my dog never needs any staples, but if she does I'll give you a hollar Bill, and cook you a nice steak to boot. Only I'm not going to pay for your hospital bill.

Instead of the Vet's version of super glue, buy the Dermabond at pharmacy, it is over the counter and also safe for humans.

Like it never happened! He's definitely going to have a scar. It doesn't seem to hurt him, I can touch it, we've also been giving him anti biotic...along with spraying him. Though I still would've liked it sewn up. Too late for that now.
