They shot out the pasture gate when I was driving the Mule in, it was dark.
He ripped his skin on something...probably a tractor i
mplement or sheet metal.
Been treating it with vetericyn spray.

Always carry a skin stapler. They work wonders. I gave Rustbucket two.

Call Amazon. I've heard that super glue would do the job but never tried it.

Just don’t glue yourself to the dog.

They are great. Try Amazon. Its better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them.

Gun dog supply has the staplers. That wound is a prime candidate.

I would feel better if it was clean and closed up, but my dad said it would be best to leave it open and keep treating with vetercyin.
We had a calf born with a raw open hole where his 'male organ ' should have been, treated it with vetercyn and it closed up quickly, but he died from other complications.
Oh well, there is no arguing with dad.;)

Not a vet, did not sleep in a Holiday Inn last nigh, do not play a doctor on TV, but regardless of using Super Glue, Vet Bond, or stapler.....be sure you shave the area a little on each side so that no hairs are pinched in the closed skin...that guarantees longer healing time and makes infection more likely.
The quicker you close it, the better. If the edges have dried, it will not heal as well.

I carry Vet Bond (have used it on myself), a stapler, a disposable razor, one of those cheap "A" battery Grooming pen\trimmer, and a small bottle of Bernadine in my dog bag.

We all need to practice Whoa more.

No disrespect to your dad, but he's wrong. Get it clean, and close it up with staples or stitches. That's why they exist, is to close wounds so they can heal.

On cuts this big a vet would close it most of the way up and leave a tube in so that it can drain.

Ask me how I know.

I do most of my dog care myself but something this big could definitely use the attention of a vet so it can be closed properly and so you can get antibiotics.

Most rural vets that care for big animals will get this done for pretty cheap. City vets are stupid expensive and judgemental.

Take the advice for what you paid for it, free.

Hope your pup gets better soon.
