I am looking for a non-guided 3 day Quail hunt. Most outfiters only offer guided hunts and want up to $1000 per gun per day. Does anyone have a lease that they would consider subleasing for a few days? Or could you point me in the right direction? Thanks, Matt E. (931)808-6422

$1000? I never really think of preserve hunts as true "hunting". I would look at it as more of fun training day with the dog. but I looked at the website and non member unguided hunts are running $110 to $240 a gun a hunt, depending on if residual birds, stocked birds, and how many hunters. That is not such a bad price actually as far as such places go.

I do preserve hunts, but if you want wild bird hunts on the "cheap" go to Kansas. Not much Texas quail, public or private.

There is an establishment down in Riveria, Texas known as the Wildhorse Lodge. It's run by the Canamores. You can look at their set-up by dialing in to www.wildhorselodge.comWhat I like about it is, you can hunt with your own dogs (I do some guiding and am partial to hunting behind my broke dogs...that's another story for another day). We have rented one of their houses and take an ice chest full of food and beverages and cook while enjoying relaxing and enjoying the bay breezes off of Baffin Bay while grilling fajitas and enjoying a cold beer. You can also do some fishing from one their piers under the lights and catch some pretty nice trout. The hunt is a released bird hunt(quail and/or chukar). They get their birds from Braune's up in Three Rivers, Mrs. Braune raises birds that are well flight conditioned. As a matter of fact, when we hunted with them, it would have been difficult to differentiate a wild bird from a Braune bird unless they were side by side. It really is a lot of fun and a good deal, too. Also, the King's Inn (one of the best seafood restaurants in the U.S.) is just minutes from any of the lodges. I highly recommend it.

That looks like a good time. I'm guessing that is not at one of the WMA's.

1. I think we had three dogs that day maybe two.
2. Not at a WMA, but not on a huge ranch either. IF TPWD spent half as much money as they spend on privately owned, game fenced, deer "research", you could have decent days at a WMA.

I was cussing we didn't use dogs that year!! We can only wish it happens again soon. Best I heard then was 30 birds in 1 hour from my buddy and his dad. Other friend got 90 in a day with his group. I only went once and we had about 65 birds in 3 hours for 8 guys with no dog.
