I liked "I have it tuned to a nice unpredictable 3lbs which should be fine for what it is." Looks like a fun build. Yeah, I am not happy with the trigger at all, but I really dont want to have a bunch of money into it when its all said and done, so I will deal for now. Those old 3 screw triggers can be tuned down to around 2 lbs and be safe. To get any lower you'd have to find a discontinued SSS Competition trigger, for some reason Fred quit making them,I have two of them on older Savage actions and they are sweet triggers. I tuned this one. When you are used to good triggers and then you try and make a factory trigger good you are just spinning your wheels. I will deal with it for now, but I foresee an upgrade soon.

Really like the color...not crazy about the sights, I like a sleek look.

What is your headspacing procedure using an unfired factory case? Thats something that I would rather not throw out on an open forum for the chance someone will botch it up and send a bolt through their face. That would make me feel bad.

Ok, she is together and headspaced. Unfortunately the irons would have been 45 degrees off, so they obviously aren't staying unless I feel the need to be ghetto while hog hunting. I still do not have shipping for my Boyd's stock, so I mocked it in the factory trash. Dont pay attention to my black [censored] on the table. It's a cookie jar. Lol

Ok, shes finished. Stock came in today to my surprise. I still never received any sort of shipping notification from Boyds. The good news is, the stock came with the gloss finish and Decelerator recoil pad installed, as well as the adjustable cheek piece. Ran into a few problems with install. First off, the bbl channel had to have the $h!t sanded out of it for this hogleg tube I screwed onto it. After an hour of sanding and fitting, I was able to get it to fit. I went ahead and bedded the recoil lug area and screwed it together. I ran into another issue after than when I went to mount my scope. The Rail I had on hand was apparently for a short action, so I had to dig around and find a crapola weaver 2 piece base. Then I ran into another problem when I attempted to mount my Vortex Crossfire II 4-12. Apparently the scope tube was not long enough for both rings to mount in their bases, so I pulled the Athlon off my 10/22 with the Burris rings and mounted that. I had to remove the front scope cap so I didnt have an interference fit. I will be ordering another base in the future and more than likely a different optic, but for now, shes ready to go shoot tomorrow.

What’s your impression of the stock to action fit. Only bedding the recoil lug suggest it’s decent.

When I said I bedded the recoil lug what I meant is I pretty much skim bedded what could be bedded. The savage action does not have a lot to bed in the rear, so I bedded behind the front action screw, the recoil lug, and about an inch past the recoil lug. This isnt my first experience with a boyds stock, but I will say that every experience has been similar. They work well with a little elbow grease in the right spots.

Thank you for the reply. I’m currently building a savage as well and using an accustock that I’m working with/on. If I don’t like it when I’m done I may consider one of those. I’ve already got more in the accustock than the Boyd’s cost and I don’t like it at all so far.

Just got back from range day. All in all, it went well. I still have all my fingers and eyeballs, with just a slight indention on my forehead. lol I zeroed at 50 in 2 shots, then went back to 100 for groups. I got excited as I watched the first 2 shots go into the same hole as I was looking through my scope. Despite wishing the last one in, it decided to puke the group to about an inch. I decided to shoot a 5 shot group next, and on the very first shot, the scope cap smacked me right between the eyes. Not enough to do any damage, but enough to give me a flinch after that. Anyways, the group was trash. Some afterthoughts: I think I will pull the bbl back off and have Morgan thread it for a brake. While the recoil was not as bad as my full house handloads for my 45-70, it still was not pleasant. I think the stock design and good Decelerator pad helped a lot, as I was honestly expecting it to be way more violent. I need to get the scope rail ordered. With the cheeseball 2 piece weaver mounts, I cannot move the scope forward enough to avoid scope eye. 338 Win Mag even through a 20 inch bbl still produces some impressive velocity numbers. I was shooting the factory Barnes Vortx 210 at 2775 avg for 3600 lb ft. Thats more than my handloads using a 405g hard cast at 2000 fps in my Guide Gun. Barnes Vortx ammo is garbage. Over the Labradar I got an ES of 53. Is it good enough? Maybe. For me I want my ES in the teens at least. Since I farmed some brass, I will probably develop a load using some ELD-X or Matchkings.
