Our resident sage on here sent me a link to a 1940 map. It was Hwy 83 and the current Hwy 83 is "Proposed Location Highway No. 4" on it. The old road is listed as "Metal Surfaced", which, after a little googling, I think means just gravel.
('Pretty cool to see a map before IH10.)
Thanks for everyone's help! That’s awesome. THF think tank wins again

Now if I can find an original TX83 sign from the period...wouldn't that be cool to have in the middle of my pasture.

Some old roads with wooden support pillars have large head copper date nails in them. I have a few.

Found this old doctor bill in a house I bought in Burton OH. It was for $21 from November 1937. Twenty one dollars was a lot of money during the depression. The house was built in 1860...always amazed me it pre-dated the civil war... Them yankee doctors were expensive!

Go to the Kimble County Historical Museum http://www.junctiontexas.net/museum.html They probably have records of roads that date back to before the stagecoach era.
