I find myself keeping all the boxes my guns come in. And now it’s getting very crowded. Do y’all keep the boxes, and to what end? Do you do it for resale, or for other reasons? I’m thinking of just throwing them all out

I keep them all. They are nice to have, and frequently command a 50$+ premium on sale.

I have bought many guns but I have only sold one gun in my life. Never saw a need to keep old boxes.

Always keep them............haven't you always seen when used long guns are sold the buyer or seller also asks for original box? That's because the buyer can identify the serial number and model the long gun is. It does make a difference.

Nope. Unless it’s a good hard case.

Yes I keep them, I put them above my garage in the attic in case I sell the gun. Otherwise they never see the light of day again. But if you sell with the box and all the BS from factory it seems to bring more. Idk why the stuff is worthless but people like that. I even have a tub full of scope and scope mount boxes. Damn I’m a pack rat and keep everything lol.

Yes, and all paperwork as well. I also make copies of the receipts since the text on thermal paper will fade away over time. I also call the manufacturer to get the production date and have done this for oldest firearms as well. My oldest firearm was manufactured in 1933, a Remington .22 rifle my grandfather purchased during the Depression when my dad was only 10-years-old. I'm sure it cost him several weeks of earnings at a time when money was very tight for most folks. Yes, if the firearm is one that a family member owned, there's usually a story that can be uncovered about it once you know when it was made. I also have a revolver my grandfather owned that was made in 1966, the same year my grandmother passed away. I was only six at that time but I know now that must have purchased it for personal protection since it was when he began living alone. He would sleep every night with it under his pillow.

One of the most important things about the box is that it's usually marked with the price and where it was purchased. This is information that a family member might one day find very interesting for sure. While the original owner might give little or no thought to the Gibson's or Western Auto price sticker on the box, a family member or relative might see it today and think it's really neat.

As for adding value to the firearm, consider the fact that firearm boxes and paperwork are sold every day on eBay for good amounts of money. Empty ammo boxes can also demand surprising amounts. There are also small coins and other items that come with new firearms that you can find being sold online and at gun shows. The things that people often throw away are often the same things they or a family wants badly many years later. As they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure.

Savage was at one time placing one of these in the boxes that came with their new rifles. The seller has sold three already and has two more to offer at $50 each.

I wonder how many might have been thrown out with the box they came with?

How many guns are we talking...10, 20, 100? Those of you with massive collections then also have massive storage collections of boxes.

I kept every one of mine for last 40 years because I was told it adds value. If it did, I did not notice. Actually, it’s a good place to store parts that are specific to the gun (ie iron sights from high powers, etc) and they will be excellent for shipping if you ever need to return gun to factory, etc. Does take up a lot of shelf space, though

I keep all mine for resale purposes. Having bought a number of guns over the years, I tend to think that those who keep boxes also tend to either care for their guns better, or baby them a bit more, and I'm willing to pay more for someone who cared for it. I don't necessarily care about any value in the box itself.

I prefer to look at the firearm to see how well its cared for. Keeping the box has nothing to do with how the gun has been cared for.

Sometimes when the gun is far away, you can only get so much info with meciocre pictures.
