I came onto a great deal on a Ruger 22/45 Mark III and I want to turn it into a falling plate gun and be able to take the sight on and off to run both classes, Iron sight and optic. My only experience is with the "tube" sights but was afraid of parralax problem. I like and use a TRS25 on my carbine but specs show parralax set at 50 on those. Are the reflex sights hard to get ised to if you are accustomed to a tube? I am not going to put an expensive sight on it. Maximum would be a Burri FF3 or a Vortex Venom. Also, would a 5-8 MOA dot be preferable on pistol? Max distance would be 50 yards, 90% would be 25 yards. Thanks for any input.

It will take a bit of practice to get used to the index, as there isn’t as much to “align” to find the dot. The dot sizes you mentioned are what I would go with, although you could probably get away with a smaller one on a non-reciprocating application.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

I’d go smaller, like 2-3moa. I don’t know what size the plates are, but an 8 MOA at 50 yards covers a 4 inch area, covers 2 inches at 25 yards.
As far as the parallax, I don’t have a clue. I run an AimPoint PRO and have never noticed a parallax issue

I have a vortex venom on my AR. It did not take any time to get used to it compared to the tube type red dot...but then again, you are not going to have a cheek weld on a pistol to help position your eye...so, I don't know. As for the size of dot, I like the smaller MOA dots.

I had the Burris FF II on my .22/.45. It was a great , affordable sight. I agree with BigPig, the smaller dots are much more precise. Big dots 3-5MOA are for close range speed shooting (Steel Challenge)

Check out some of the offerings from Holosun. They get great reviews and a lot of competition shooters are running them over much more expensive optics.
I just ordered the new Holosun 512 for my PCC Comp rifle. Can’t wait to try it out!

I have a 22/45 that wears a TRS25 currently. Also have a Glock G40 that has a Burris FF3. Much prefer the reflex sight, and the 22/45 will be wearing a Venom shortly (just haven't had a chance to install it).
Both of the reflex sights you list are parallax-free.
I prefer the 3 MOA dot.

I run a 6 moa C-More on a 90* mount on my Buckmark. Its one of the priciest options, but its such a fantastic setup. I can pull the rail off and replace it with the factory rail, in the case of the buckmark, thats where the rear sight is, very easily.

because the cmore and most relex sights are tall. turning it on a 90* gets the reticle much closer to the bore resulting in much more consistent POI at different ranges.

Good info and I appreciate it. Adchunts, how did you like the TRS25 on your 22/45? What was the main drawback to it? Also, are the reflex sites easy to "wash out" in bright sunlight?

i ran a trs-25 on my buckmark before i upgraded. it did a great job. The only real draw back is i found it difficult to find the dot on occasion, and the extra height meant the difference my zero at 5 yards and 20 yards was bigger than i liked.

Tff caribou, I was always partial to the Buckmarks and was looking into ordering the suppressor ready UFX Plus when I saw the Mark III in the case at an insamely low price and couldn't let it stay there, LOL. Question about yours, is that a URX frame? Looks like it from the larger curve on the lower back, and if so, where did you find the grips you have on that? All I have ever seen were only made for the UFX frame. I am not big on the finger grooves of the URX or UDX.

I thought you ran it that way so that you could get to the Allen screw to change back to iron site without removing optic from base.

Seems like I have to “hunt” a little more to get the dot located in the scope as opposed to the FF3 or Venom. It does add a bit more weight than the reflex sights as well. Haven’t had any issues with washout on the reflex units.

I got side plates from Striplin Custom Gunworks that allow you to mount 1911 grips to the gun. They may not make them anymore, they arent on his website anymore. I paid about $70 for the side plates i think. I spent WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much money on this pistol. $1k+ pretty easy over the course of a few months.
