My parents have done 3 or 4 of them over in Europe. They absolutely loved them. Smaller ships, said the food was great and the tour guides were fun and knowledgeable and could get places others couldn’t.
This past year they did the big Viking cruise liner up in Canada on the east coast and said the smaller ones over seas were better.

Never have been on a Viking Cruise. Wife an I talked about it but decided to do an Alaskan cruise this year.
I am still looking for the perfect apron, one with reinforced knee areas would be perfect.

Wife and I took a Danube River cruise two years ago. It was great. Only problem, if it was really a problem, was that the River was low. Some of the places we were supposed to dock couldn’t be reached on the River, so we did some traveling by bus. I don’t usually like bus rides, but we did get to see some country we would otherwise not seen if we’d done all the traveling by boat. Anyway, it was a great trip.
I’d love to get back to that monastery near Regensburg, Germany. Been making beer there since 620 AD, and they are sooo good at it. And they had big pretzels. Beer and pretzels might sound trivial, since you could do it at home, but it isn’t the same. Trust me on that.
We also took a River cruise with the American Cruise Line. It was on the Snake River, from inland to the coast. A real small boat that held about 120 travelers. If you do that one, try for the penthouse rooms. They only have 2 or 3 of them, but it’s a much better view. It’s a very relaxed and relaxing trip.

I don't know how much applies, but I did a day cruse in Germany, it was a real relaxing way to see the sights we stopped for a great lunch. It's one of my favorite memories from when I was stationed in Germany.

GF tagged along with her elderly parents on one last summer as kind of a care taker. They saw a lot of pretty country and had a great time!
Funny thing, though. She'd send me pics and I'd ask her, "So how is the weather in such-and-such right now?". This went on for days and it was driving her crazy trying to figure out how I knew what town she was in every day. Oh it was hilarious.

We have been on two of their river cruises and three of their ocean cruises.
Nice having only 200 people to share the river boat with.

Wife and I did the Viking Amsterdam to Basel Switzerland cruise a couple of years ago. It was great. I would rate it second of 8 cruises we have taken, with Alaska #1. The Viking cruises are pricey, unless they include the airfare. Some people on our cruise got airfare included for what we paid for just our cruise. Also, you can negotiate where the flight originates from, not just what is in the brochure. It seems like everything is negotiable with them. Just remember your not in Texas anymore when you go there. You are the foreigner.

Very scenic. We also did the American Cruise Line Snake River trip. It was ok. Be advised this cruise caters to seniors. On our trip 90% of the clientele were age 70-85 and excursions ashore were not very demanding. Wife retires next year and we want to do some traveling. I've heard a lot of negatives about big crowds on cruises. For Europe or on any other continent, airfare, unless purchased way in advance look,s pretty expensive.
What's the best way to do this stuff?

Dave, I don’t pretend to know the best way to do the cruises, but what works for us is to go on the smaller ships. And if you do your own airfare, do it through a good travel agent, and fly to the city the cruise leaves from a couple of days early. That cuts the stress of missing a flight and lets you see some of the city.
Our best cruise was either Alaska or Italy. Hard to pick just one. As for worst cruise, it was a Carib cruise out of Miami. Not doing that again. Honestly, I think the Carib is just too darn crowded with ships and tourists these days. Show up to dock at an island and there might be 4 other ships, bigger than yours, already there.
We’ll do Alaska again, for sure. Smaller boat, more stops.
