I recently caught the arrowhead hunting bug and it’s quite addicting. I’ve had a deer lease in young county for 10 years and didn’t realize all the history I’ve been walking around on. I’ve found 3 broken points and a crap ton of chips and pieces. I keep hoping to find one that isn’t broke but I really don’t know what I’m doing. There are two major creeks that run through our lease so I’ve been sticking close to them surface hunting. I would love to find a camp but not sure what to look for. Any advice on where to look would be much appreciated.

Try to imagine what the area looked like 100+ years ago. Also look for piles of burnt rock. Those were the trash heaps of the day. Search when the sun is low on the horizon and look for the shiny rocks.

I had allot of luck finding them over the years. I will say that each place I've hunted for them has been different.
If your lease allows guests after the deer season I'll be more than happy to go out to your place with you and I'll give you my best advice and show you how it's done.
If interested give me a PM up

If you're finding broken points and flakes, you're in a good area, keep looking all it takes is time and patience. I prefer to look around washouts where the ground has been scoured out, most of the time the arrowheads will be sitting right on top in these washouts. And sometimes you just never know, they can be just about anywhere but those will be singles from where they were shot or dropped. 90%+ points make my case, I've got gallon ziplocks full of broken points, so I'd say it's probably one good point for every 10-15 broken points I find in S TX. Good luck, it's one of my favorite things to do outside of hunting.

I don't normally hunt for points but I've found a few interesting pieces. I found this axe on a hunt in Cottle county.

This, and..
Once you have learned what an Indian mound is and where they generally appear, you can spot them a mile away. Kicking around some dirt and finding the square chunks of fire rocks (midden) and you know you are in the right spot.
I found out real quick to not say a word about a known mound. You will have more trespassers than you thought was possible.

I did find one of the broken points at the top of a washout. Do you ever dig and sift? I’ve sifted a couple sandbars with no luck but find chips and pieces and sometimes chunks in the same creek and sticking out of the wall of the creek. I hope to have a collection as nice as yours one day. I really enjoy looking for them. It’s terribly addicting

If you find a mound/area with points, sifting is a big help. I allowed some guys to dig in our mound, they were scavengers and were just moving dirt quickly to try and find points. I went back with a 2x4 framed sifter with 1/2" mesh and found a dozen that they missed. And they believed they were so thorough that there was no way they could miss one.

I have been on a lease in SW Young county for almost 20 years. We also have a major creek running through ours. Over the years I have found a few places on the lease where those "chips and pieces" wash out. One is a high area in a field near the creek. Others on level areas at the base of bluffs that line our valley. Others are large washes on the edge of the creek. And one on a level area above one of the bluffs. I check each of those sites on a visit to the lease every time after there have been good rains. Every now and then I will find a whole arrowhead on those sites. Take note of those areas your finding material and walk them over after every time you have had some good thunderstorms in the area. Some of the sites are completely grown over in the spring. Now is the best time to go. I never find any big ones on our lease like the ones some have posted. Most of mine from the lease are small. Harrells for example which the site they are named for is only two or three miles away as the crow flies. So be sure to kick every one of those chips out of the dirt. Sometimes they look like a flake in the dirt, but uncover as an arrowhead.

Nice collection.
I had (daughters have most of that stuff now) a five gallon bucket full of broken points, buffalo teeth, bones, etc. One day at work I (with help) separated all of the tails and points onto a huge assembly table (8ft x 16ft)
During breaks guys would dig through and try to pair points to tails. We put together about a dozen of them perfectly. I let them keep them if they made a match. It was fun.
That was a good reminder that Indian mounds are trash mounds, full of all of the unwanted stuff. The best points are out in the woods somewhere, used for killing.

If there are any fields abutting a place where you find something, right after a rain is a good time to look. Better if it has been recently plowed.

I can’t wait to go after it rains hard. I find myself going back to the same areas and I always find newly uncovered pieces. The terrain on our place is so rocky and has lots of hills. One hill I’d damn near call a mountain. When you’re up on it, it looks like the highest point around. Think they camped up on that mountain?

Walk the creek bottoms and edges. Also look at the top end of where a small gully starts. If the creek runs through a reasonably flat area, search around the first high spot.

Think closer to water. A flat area close to water, facing the rising sun (east) is a good place to start. Mounds with old charcoal and mussel shells are prime spots. My favorite dig site was on the Guadalupe about 400 yards from Gruene hall. Place sold and they scraped every bit of topsoil and hauled it off. Heartbreaking to say the least.

Arrowheads come in many different sizes, shapes and colors.
Don't just look for arrowheads while searching. Train your eyes to look for flint only, picking up any flint you see.
Most will be surface finds but some may be mostly buried just showing an edge.
Do this and you'll be shocked with what you start finding up

Good luck and keep us posted.

I definitely look for flint. I have two gallon ziplocks full of it. I’m getting pretty good a spotting it. I’ll definitely let everyone know if I ever find anything

No arrowheads yet but I did find this in one of the creeks. A bead of some sort. The hole goes all the way through[Linked Image]

Think it would be worthwhile to sift the sandbars in the creek where I find all the flakes?
