I just got a Ruger SP101 .357 snubby (2 1/4) and am looking for recommendations for a self defense load. Hornady 125 grain Critical Defense seem to be popular, any other I should consider? Thanks

In the shorter barrels I tend to go with the heaviest (within reason) bullet I can find.

357 mag was designed around 158 gr bullets. Personally, i tend to stick with what a round has been designed for. Never had to use it on two legged predators, and pray I never have to, but i can tell you that a 158 gr hornady xtp will put a hurting on pigs. It's what I would use defensively as well.

.357 or .38 Special Speer 135 grain gold dot short bbl. Take a look at the LuckyGunner Labs for 38 special/357 mag, they have done fairly extensive testing on various brands of ammunition and they use a 2” and 4” revolver for realistic results.

Take a hard look at Winchester PDX1, because it performs well with short barrel velocities. That is what I used in an LCR-357 that I carried for several years. My wife has her own LCR-357 and she uses the PDX1 in .38 special +P.
If you are less concerned about over-penetration (like out in the woods) take a look at Buffalo Bore hard cast.
