Here she is, my Winchester 300 Mag. I won this bare rifle for $26 in a raffle and added some extras. Put a Vortex HST 6-24x50 on her, had Class III machining thread the barrel for a Witts custom muzzle break. I've shot 1 box of shells through her and was really impressed! Only got her out to 250 yards before it got dark on me. This is my 1st rifle that I would consider a consistant 1000 yard shooter.... Pros-cons? Advice? Let me know what you think!

That's a good set up. With the 1:10" twist, you can shoot the 230 grain and under. The factory ammo will do ok for you, but when you start to stretch it out further, the factory ammo will not keep up as well. A good hand load or custom ammo will shoot better and more consistent. The 300 WM was one of the rounds I shot competitively for many years and know it well. A 208 grain A-max/ELDM, 215 Hybrid, 225 ELDM, 230 Berger Hybrid would all be good options for the longer range shooting and hunting. The 300 WM is still my favorite round out there.

Nice setup. If it were mine, I'd start off by replacing the 2 piece bases with a 1 piece 20 MOA rail and the scope rings with either Seekins or Vortex Precision Matched. Depending on where you are at in the vertical travel once you got sighted in, you may or may not have enough adjustment left in the HST to get to 1000 yards. You probably do, but once you've added that extra 20 MOA, you should have enough adjustment to go well past 1000. Good luck. I think you'll find long range shooting highly addictive.

One other thing I just thought of. I've got two of those HST scopes and I had trouble with them running out of parallax adjustment around 800 yards. Might just be my tired old eyes, but I don't seem to have that problem with any of my Nightforce scopes.

I don't know much about the Winchester XTR's. The guys at the gun shops liked them from what they said.

I shoot 180 grain Nosler Accubonds in mine.
