Going to start feeding protein and need to know if PVC on the feeder legs actually works at deterring raccoons.

Yes it helps but some still get to the mechanism. Cut my loss way back. I've only had a few get by on one if my feeders, on the same leg. Make sure they are long enough and move freely.

Make sure you use 4" PVC and at least 5' long.

Make sure you use 4" PVC and at least 5' long. Assuming I drill holes through the bottom of each leg and put a long bolt through.

I would drill hole at the top and use wire to hang down leg from the feeder so it will move more freely. A bolt would not let it move. The pipe moving is what makes it difficult for climbing.

Charlie Going to use the Boss Buck 55 gallon barrel lower unit. Not sure I’ll feed long term, so looking for a low cost option to test.

I went to the Boss Buck site, don’t see what you could be using for protein? If you’re going to end up with their protein ports, here’s something I did to get medieval with the coons. Besides the screws, you can buy the metal teeth plate things at Home Depot. I actually needed another layer behind the ones you see. It really cutdown on the nefarious activity but a couple of acrobats still figured out how to hang. So just to ask, what result are you looking for to make the decision to keep feeding protein if this is a test? Charlie

I use the pvc pipe very successfully. mine are 32 inches long and 4" pipe. Holes in top with two small chains holding it. I like the bottom of the pipe to be about 2' off of ground. I have a friend who uses bungee cords instead of chains to hold up the pipes. Makes it even more difficult for the coons, but they do rot after a year or so.

A buddy has the pvc on theirs, I think they got a deal on some 6 inch pipe used somewhere some how. They said that it has really cut down on the coons.
