I have never used a choke before, nor do I know what would be appropriate for my need so I figured I'd come here and see what y'all have ta say. Or if I even need a choke. I plan on doing some predator hunting (fox, coyote) I'm using my Mossberg maverick 88 20 gauge, I have shot a fox with buckshot with it before at about 15 yards and it still limped 30 feet before it expired, I just wonder if a choke would help send a tighter pattern down rage. I probably won't take a shot past 40 yards, especially with the shotgun, What say you?

Most 88s are fixed choke. Yes, a full choke would send a tighter pattern per se but how are you looking to get there?

"Full Extra full" as stated above.
They make wrenches to get those in and out with. Be sure to use one so they don't get messed up.

I would pattern the gun and make sure you find a load that works best in your gun. It will also help you determine point of aim. I would start there.

Spend the money for a choke on some # 7 tungsten super shot. That modified choke will be just the ticket. You will be amazed....

Full choke, #4 Buck lead works fine, maybe go with 3". Thanks That's Modified. That's a "middle of the road" choke. Like others have said, I would use something more along the lines of a full choke for what you're wanting. EDIT: I quoted the wrong posts. I meant to quote the post where you described the "Mod" markings on the choke.

I just use a quarter to unscrew a choke. I guess it is soft enough to prevent damage. It definitely helps to have the right choke. I understand that buckshot can do weird things in chokes and may not like a tight one, but generally more constriction gives tighter pattern in most cases.
I think best thing you can do is pattern a couple of loads with the choke you have. Learn where the center of the pattern hits in relation to your bead, that will make a huge difference when you know where to hold to center the pattern on target. Also helps to know how much range you get before the pattern opens up and becomes useless. Also try a couple different loads. Some good suggestions already been made. I would recommend a good lead BB load. I think Winchester and Hornady still produce them.
Better to know how to use what you got, than to go buy a bunch of new untested stuff. Should probably pattern the gun before you shoot at any kind of animal. But i know alot of people don't.
Disclaimer- i am not an expert. Hehe

Email reply from Carlsons, they recommended this choke for what I'm wanting to do, https://www.choketube.com/choke-tube-search-results.php?q=17777""Lead shot, Steel Shot, Copperplated Shot, Nickel Shot, Hevi-Shotshells™, and Buck Shot can be used in our Sporting Clay Choke Tubes. ""
