I have a Ruger American compact 223 that stays in the mule. The last time I shot it was probably a month ago. Yesterday afternoon I saw a porcupine in a tree and worked the bolt to chamber a round. I could not close the bolt all the way. Tried again and still would not close the last little bit. Pulled the bolt and could not see down the barrel. Took it home and had to get out a mud dabber or what ever built the mud nest in the barrel. Cold have been bad if the round had chambered. Going to have to start putting some tape on the end of the barrel

Had similar thing happen with spider building web inside a barrel. Was cleaning out rifles between season and I was glad I did. Glad to hear you avoided that potential disaster.

Tape or a balloon would help prevent this problem. Glad all turned out okay.

You were very lucky. Had similar incident with out the potential disaster. Left my new chain saw at my cabin in a truck storage box. ran great before I left it there however when I took it out a month later it wouldn't start. After hours of pulling and pulling took it back to home depot and had the repair shop look it over I got a 15 minute lecture for not draining and running dry because of ethanol. He did look closer and he saw a mud dabber had sealed the carburetor. Cleaned it out and ran like a top.

Seen photos of the special ops guys putting a condom on the muzzle, and a rubber band to keep it there.
I'm glad you did not lose an eye, and did not need facial surgery.

Glad you caught it.
I like that they kill black widow spiders, but hate how they plug everything up. Worse case for me was the exhaust of my little Honda generator. I couldn't get it to start and spent an hour trying to figure out why before realizing a dauber had plugged up the exhaust. Then my Mule started giving me issues and while looking for the fuel filter to change that out, I realized that a vent line was plugged up by a dauber. Both engines ran great once they where unplugged.

We called them plug bugs. On the ranch any hydraulic hose to fuel lines left in the barn always had to be cleaned out before we could use them. All of our ranch trucks had guns in the headache rack and you better check the barrel before taking a shot at a coyote or coon. We had an old 222 that was always in one of the trucks and it hadn't been shot in a while. Dad happened to check it one day and a plug bug had built it's nest in there. It corroded and pitted the front 2 inches of the barrel. We had it cut off and it still shoots ok.
