I let a giant elk go in N.M. many years ago. He was about to jump the fence onto the Jicarilla Apache reservation. No picture but I still see him in my mind to this day.
In the end, it's not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years.

I wish I had him on camera, but about 15 years ago in Coleman County several hunters reported seeing a monster, dark colored buck, but no one had gotten a shot at him. Early one afternoon I was in a blind on the ridge of a hill and he strolled in chasing a doe. I believe he was 12 points, but massive and heavy. Very dark fur - more gray than tan or brown. I was shooting a .308 Win from a Remington Auto and I glassed him, released the safety, a let go with a ...CLICK! Shell wasn't seated, the buck jumped 6' up, and I threw up a little in my mouth. To date, the biggest buck I have ever seen (and may ever see) while hunting a LF property.

What the heck man! I kept waiting for the shot..... I have the patience of Job. This deer was a regular at this location so I was waiting to see what else would show up. There was a really nice buck with split G3’s that would show up occasionally that I also had thoughts of killing but he was just not quite what I was looking for. 👌 We only get one trophy per year so I am pretty particular.🤪

We have never seen an anthrax problem in 10 years I have hunted there. Some ranches do not get it very often it seems even in areas with ranches that have had it. It cycles from what little I know about it...but generally every 10-15 yrs from what I have been told. This year was the right rainfall and dry periods for an outbreak of it.

I still would have shot the droptine..... Just from my experience how droptines appear and disappear for no rhyme or reason.

Back in the late 80’s, I suppose, was when I finally realized that instead of me patterning the big bucks, they were patterning me. So, being at least semi intelligent, I decided to hunt in other than places I always hunted. This was in the Lowlands along the Mississippi River. A big buck would be around 250 pounds or more, with heavy antlers, and I knew where one fed in the late evenings. So I got my trusty folding stool, went to a promising spot, cut some palmettos and built a blind along the edge of a cut bean field. I got all camo’d up and sat down to wait. This was the area where he fed, and the wind was in my favor. I had doe feed within 30 feet of me, so I was basically invisible. As the day faded, and light dimmed, here he came. A huge old mossy horn. But...he came out to my right, and the rifle pointed left, so I began the slow hopefully silent turn to allow me to shoot. I got to where I needed to be, as light faded, and I slowly lifted the rifle and made another slight turn, and my old trusty stool gave it up and broke and dropped me backwards into a mud puddle. As I lay there, that old buck was doing some serious snorting. I never saw him again. I still think about him, as you can tell.
Not my monkeys, not my circus...
