I want a 5.7X28 bolt action rifle. None are currently produced commercially. What would be a good action or base rifle to build it on? I have a Remington Model 7 .243 that I would consider using if it's worthwhile to use it. This would be a hunting gun and not for competition. Any ideas?

Part of the problem will be finding one with the correct bolt head and or one that can be used without great expense for that purpose. The 5.6X28 chares the same case head as the 25 auto pistol round just lengthened and necked down. Ballistics of it are about the same as a modern 22 Hornet and the Hornet can reach the same velocity with the right powder and same 40gr bullet.

If the bolt head will can be made work for it the Ruger 77/22H might workout for a light weight hunting rifle or just go with the Hornet in that rifle.

I like the round and have killed coyotes and turkey with it.

another thing about the 5.7 round the cases are coated and that coating can come off during the reloading process.

I'm not opposed to a TC Encore and I know I can get a 5.7 barrel made for it. I was just hoping for a bolt gun, but finding a bolt face for .25 auto sounds like a task. The only reason I want to use it for a varmint rifle rather than a 22 hornet is I have a PS90 and thousands of rounds of SS197SR.

The 5.7 bolt face is offered by Pacific Tool and Gauge on Remington 700 replacement bolts and Savage 10/110 bolt heads.

Was a guy on snipers hide years ago that built one. It was interesting to say the least. Pretty sure he was a Smith for GA precision or tied to them a little.

I was thinking the same thing as MClark about using a Savage or Big Horn action with the replacement bolt head. That may be the easiest direction if they offer that. Fine another similar caliber that share the same case head diameter (or near same to modify the bolt head) to use to build from.

Would be a great little rifle. I love my 5.7 pistol and I have the AR 5.7 also, sweet shooters.

Sounds like a savage and bolt head swap is the way I would go.

looks like Savage might have made the model 25 in the 5.7 at one time.

xcel arms makes a semi auto that will take the FN pistol mags

I like it in the PS 90 but the best I can seem to coax out of that with its long trigger is about 2 MOA which still works for yotes out to 125 yards or so

I don't know of anyone who actually got a 25 Walking Varminter in 5.7 X28. I think Savage was going to and then stopped production for some reason. If I went with the Savage and bolt head swap what would be the best rifle caliber to start with?
