Youth football league after coach faces $500 fine, suspension over big victory

Two-time Super Bowl-winning wide receiver Torrey Smith tweeted his frustrations Saturday with a Pennsylvania youth football league that allegedly fined and suspended a coach over a team's big victory.

Smith, who retired from the NFL this season, tweeted the Keystone State Youth Football league, based in Philadelphia, was going to suspend a coach for two games and fine him $500 because the team won a game, 36-0. Smith said the league disciplines the coach if their team wins by more than 30 points.

Make sure everyone including losers get a trophy.

Participation trophies are too.
Winners get a trophy and the losers get to go back and work harder so they can win the next time.

Running up the score butt hurts people now days and it shall not be tolerated

I see this every week with my son's junior high football team when they win by 40+

Example: During yesterday's game my son's coach stopped attempting extra points after their 2nd score as he knew it would be a blow out. Kicking extra points are worth 2 points at this level and running a play from the two yard line only 1 point.

Also the starters were pulled the 2nd half

Running up the score has always butt hurt people and is a chickenchit thing to do. There’s no reason to run the score up and embarrass another coach and team. We didn’t do it when I was playing ball because it shows poor sportsmanship and no character. I don’t believe a coach should be fined for it, but that is the rules he agreed to play by. If he doesn’t like it he can start his own league.

This is a problem for all coaches, when you put in your reserves to hold down the score, the kids that are finally getting a chance are eager to show the coach what they can do. When the kid had a chance he did what he's been coached to do. A mercy rule where the game is stopped makes more sense.

I agree that teams shouldn't flat out run the score up, but completely getting off the gas when you're up 28-0 after the first quarter and only scoring 14 more points the remaining three quarters isn't making their team any better.

Their opponent yesterday refused to punt at any point in the game even though they never crossed their own 30 yard line. Final score doesn't mean anything to that team IMO

We got the score run up on us regularly. Every time it happened, I learned more about football by playing against a better team. If they had laid down and stopped playing to their potential, I wouldn't have learned anything and would never have gotten any better from the experience.

Its OK to beat someone, just don't beat the crap out of them. I say give the coach a $500 bonus everytime they score over 30 points.

It is called the "Mercy Rule", plus it has a lot of nicknames but generally called the slaughter rule. It has applications in a lot of organized sports, including football, baseball wresting soccer and the list goes in. It also has quite a bot of history behind it. Even the NCCAA.

The adults get more butthurt about than the kids do. Kids might get pizzed off a bit, but it's the adults that really can't handle it.
Suck it up and move on.

When my oldest grandson was a junior they had two football games against teams that had absolutely no talented players. Our coaches offered to just run the clock so the game would be over faster. Both teams refused and the games were painful to watch. You have to feel bad for the players of teams getting beat by scores of 70 to 0 even with all of the subs playing for the winning team.
