Nice morning, so I got in my tall blind to watch the world go by. Saw a few deer and one cow. The neighbor’s old red cow found its way to the hay pasture again. Well, heck, but the cow does happen to be in about the same spot where I see a lot of deer, hogs, and coyotes. It’s a featureless spot that slopes gently away from where I sit, so I have never successfully lasered the distance. The critters go north/south in that area, but rarely stand still for long. It’s a bit past a power line pole, which is at 250 yards, so I sort of guessed the cow was at 300ish yards. Wrong! The cow was at 398 yards. No wonder I missed a trotting coyote a month or so back. If you had told me it was that far, I’d have called BS.

New Mexico prairie opened my eyes on that. I was fairly decent on our own Mills county place but on the prairie there weren't many items for reference. I was routinely off by 100-200 yards once you got past 400.

I bought a pair of vortex range finding binoculars.
Hated paying for them but they are awesome and having a two-in-one unit makes a great deal of sense

You have to try and make things relatable, I've always judged hunting distances in terms of football distances, length of a football field, bomb passes, 50-60 yards, etc. and more recently in last 20+ years, golf shots. Could I hit a 300 yard drive that far, a 165 yard 8 or 7 yard, a 140 pitching wedge, etc. Both have served me very well while hunting.

I used to not have a problem judging distance, but after I lost my eyesight in my left eye, I lost depth perception and cannot judge distance for squat. I have to use known distance markers to tell.

I use the golf method a lot, and I'm usually within a 10 yards up to 200 yards. I'm pretty accurate out to 600 I believe.
