Been so busy, haven’t done anything. Not checked on blinds, filled feeders, nothing. Very ill prepared.

Oh well, I hunt east Texas. They don’t eat the corn anyway.

I need to do something in the next couple weeks. Where to start????

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

I am in that boat Role-Tide. Where I hunt they moved in two logging crews the week before opening day (knew they were coming). My backup spot got clearcut last year along with my them stopping 50 yards from my primary one. Traveling next week and will get everything up and feeding when I get back from up northeast.

I hunt East Texas too. I set up feeder and pop up blind last weekend. I've been busy as well. I'll go back the weekend before deer season to make sure everything is OK. I stopped using game cameras several years ago.

It is never too late.
I know a few guys that head to the lease the day before opening. I have helped them fill feeders at 10:00pm and they will go off 9 hours later for the first time. With flash lights we do some quick trimming of new growth, evict some critters form the blind and they are ready to go. They shoot just as many deer and always get a nice trophy buck. They seem to think the rest of us are silly working all year just to shoot a few deer.

Yes, some guys get their fix by hunting just a single weekend or two with little or no preparation. It seems more common with those who hunt public land where a guy might only hunt Opening Day for no other reason than to spend a morning in the woods on that special day.

I'm sure there are those who know members on private leases who only hunt a few times each season before they're onto something else.

I stopped feeding many years ago and haven't seen any less deer on my ranch.

take wasp spray when you do go ... opening morning archery/MLD3, everything was prepped except I hadn't checked my stand. About an hour before first light, I start to crawl up in my stand and find a red wasp nest about the size of a cross section of a football loaded with those little devils. Back to camp to get wasp spray ...

I checked my blinds for nests back in early September. Had a few big nests, but got them sprayed and knocked down. Was out yesterday and rechecked, lots of dead wasps (the BIG ugly red ones), but no nests.

Bust my azz all year long repairing stands, improving camp, mowing, spraying feeder pins, killings coyotes, killing pigs, keeping protein out, keeping corn feeders going, repairing roads, etc. Burn a lot a diesel and spend a lot time and money but never get everything done.

This. I enjoy the year round prep as much as pulling the trigger. I see it as part of the hunt.

I do admit to doubting this line of reasoning during the 100+ degree days. flame

I usually always enjoy getting things in order. Been swamped since May.
I will try to head out fri or Saturday. At least to get no fly peat strips for wasps.

I fall into the "don't do anything" camp. My cousin and a few friends hunt my place and they're there at least monthly filling feeders and checking stands. I don't even have a feeder any more. Don't need one. Everyone else feeds for me. I'll go out all season, but I don't even get serious until that week between Christmas and New Year's. Most of the rest are tagged out by Thanksiving and the ones who aren't are more into football.

Kids filled all 6 feeders a couple of weeks ago. They are set for 2 seconds twice per day. With the huge acorn drop that is now starting. I saw no reason to stack corn on the ground at this time.

Don't waste your money buying anything other than this. The can doesn't lie, it leaves them hanging dead on the nest, and it will reach 20 feet or more.

Shredded roads and fields last Friday, today topped off feeders, fixed one that wasn’t working, filled it up, de-bugged blinds, weedeated around blinds and feeders then went and sighted in both my boys deer rifles and confirmed zero on one of mine.

We are ready for youth season here in a couple of weeks.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I get a kick out of the guy I see headed for the lease on Friday before opening day with a blind in the back of the truck.

I enjoy the preparation almost as much as the hunt. Setting up tree stands and filling feeders is a good time for whatever reason.

Aside from the really hot weekends, I go down as much as I can in the off-season to do "stuff". I get as much enjoyment out of that as I do the actual hunts.
