Getting my dad a new rifle for Christmas. He's shot an old Remington 700 30-06 as long as I've been alive. He's getting older and looking to get him a deer rifle with a little less kick.

Primarily a deer hunting rifle.

Also he's going to want a wooded stock.

Under $1000

Thanks

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

You could have his rifle threaded and add a muzzle brake. You could pay for a suppressor for that price also.

7/08 would be my choice, several made with wood stocks IIRC.

As my Dad aged, he wanted a smaller and lighter rifle. We got him a Ruger Ultralight in 270 and he loved it. These days, if he was still around, the choice might be a Ruger Compact in 6.5 CM or in 260 (like mine was). Or one of those really light Tikkas in 6.5CM. I forget what they called that Tikka (super-light?).

As I’ve gotten older I also went to a smaller lighter bolt gun - Tikka in 260.

Used or new? I've seen a couple of Ruger 77s on Gunbroker recently that have beautiful wood. I think any of the short action chamberings would work. .308, 7mm-08, 6.5CM, .243...

I bought one for my son 5 years ago. Then I bought one for my wife. Just bought another last week for my other son.

It’s a great round. More or less a short action .270.

My wife took here to Africa and killed a Kudu, Nyala and a Zebra all with one shot

7mm-08 is a great hunting round and does well for long range target also. I have been killing critters since 1982 with it and none have ever argued.

These days though I shoot and hunt more with a 6.5 Grendel, part of that is as I get older I find more enjoyment in shooting lighter recoiling rounds nd my Cardiologist said to lay off the heavy recoil producing rounds.

Impressive....I bet it wasn't easy to get them all lined up. grin

OP, I agree 7mm-08 or 6.5 CM are two good choices.

7-08 sure seems popular but don’t discount what a .243 will do

Weatherby Vanguard Sporter. The Deluxe is too glossy for my taste. In addition the Deluxe only comes in .257 Weatherby Mag, .270, 30-06 and .300 Weatherby Mag. The Sporter comes in 7mm-08. 6.5 Creedmoor Vanguard is only available in a synthetic stock.
